race/urm

I'm a junior this year and I was wondering if I could possibly fill in the Hispanic bubble on the common app. My last name isn't Spanish, but my great-grandfather was spanish and we can prove it with documents and whatnot if necessary. Is being 1/8 Spanish not enough for the common app? I was thinking it would probably be able to serve as a hook when I'm applying since I'm pretty sure there aren't too many people of Basque (a Spanish ethnic group) descent running about colleges.

Being 1/8 Spanish isnt enough to mark down on common apps as hispanic/latino. This is morally wrong

It isn’t your place to say otherwise. Question for the OP: Do you consider yourself Hispanic in day to day activities? In other words, have your parents identified themselves as Hispanic or… do you participate in Hispanic customs or otherwise?

Race/ethnicity are confusing subjects. I think Spanish (as in, from Spain) people would be actually considered European, and therefore, white.

But Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity. So you can be a white Latino (ex. Cameron Diaz), black Latino (ex. Zoe Saldana) or even asian Latino (some Filipinos). So if Latino culture considerably affects your life, like the music, food, traditions, language, etc, then I say go ahead.
