Race

Would the admissions office look up your race using your SSN if you didn't mark it in your application?

I don't think they would go to the trouble although I doubt anyone here knows for sure. But why wouldn't you mark it? If you think your ethnicity is "over-represented", they could probably tell just by looking at your name anyway.

they can't. my last name sounds white but i'm asian. my mom's first name is asian and i scored well on an asian language SAT. also...there are the other things that go on my application like that i lived in an asian country for some time, etc

Hm then... well I personally would check the box because I wouldn't want to hide it.

But I can't deny that it probably would be to your advantage to not check anything. They might wonder a bit at why you didn't do it, but I don't know if they'll actually go and look it up from your SSN, sorry. Maybe call the office anonymously and ask them lol?

i wonder if the admissions office reads these things. i wouldn't be surprised if they did. there are probably a few other people in my situation though.

i know i WANT to check the box but...i know competition is really high among asians and i don't want to be counted in lol. does my race really matter so much that they would check my SSN? :-/

Ok, I look at it this way. If you don't check the box, they're going to assume that you're white or asian, since anyone else would have wanted to be counted as a URM. So then they're going to read your application under the assumption that you are white or Asian, and considering that other things on your application point to your being Asian, I think they're going to figure it out. They don't have time to look up your SSN, no, but they're going to figure it out anyway. So I don't think not checking the box will really help you, but who knows. (Btw, I'm white, didn't check a box and got in early. But I'm sure they knew I was white).

wouldn't it be wrong for them to assume what i am

No. Your race is your race is your race, unfortunately for you if you're Asian or white.
