Hello, I was hoping somebody currently attending Penn State University Park could tell me how much racial diversity there is on campus. Maybe you could do a sample of ten typical people, i.e. x/10 are Asian, x/10 are white, etc. I ask this question because racial diversity is very important to me and I want the university that I attend to have a plethora of different people/cultural influences. Thank you very much in advance!

If racial diversity is what you are looking for don’t come to penn state. Don’t go to any rural school for that matter. Penn State is not diverse at all, and it is pretty segregated like a lot of rural schools in the northeast.

Would avoid Penn State then. % of white people is in the upper 70’s. Id avoid any public state school if you want lots of diversity.

Thank you for your replies, that’s very disappointing to hear. I thought that since Penn State was such a large school there would be some diversity going on. Guess I’ll have to visit and see for myself.

A great website to visit is ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

Type in a college name and you will find out of lots of info about most colleges/U’s. Its a great place to start.

Thank you I’ll try it out.

I will say this though, when I was on campus both times, it did feel like a university in the sense that there were a lot of different people around from seemingly different backgrounds, etc. So visiting may be a good idea to see for yourself, but the official number is 73% white at Penn State. As mentioned, its located in rural PA, and rural farmlands historically aren’t very diverse. The state of PA in 2011 had a population of 83% white people for the whole state, so its not a very diverse state to start out with.

State College is the Alabama of Pennsylvania. The town is white dominated and don’t be surprised if you see a lots of conservative racist hicks and rednecks there.

The campus is more diverse than the town but its nothing to write home about. I wouldn’t consider it white dominated since the white percentage is in the low 70’s. West Virginia University is white dominated which has more than 80% white. No problems should arise inside the campus or in the classrooms but I can’t say anything about the dorms.

If you want African American diversity, look at:
University of Maryland-College Park and Baltimore County
University of Miami
Temple University
Any other historically black colleges

If you want Asian:
University of California-(any)
University of Washington
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign

If you want all races equally, any top public and private universities. (except the state of California)

PSU has religion buildings(or whatever its called). Have you visited the campus yet ?

“State College is the Alabama of Pennsylvania. The town is white dominated and don’t be surprised if you see a lots of conservative racist hicks and rednecks there.”

XtremePower - Wow. Really? I really hope you are going somewhere else. Have you spent any real amount of time at Penn State? Really?

Do you mean diversity (having lots of different races/religions/etc.) or do you mean having a high percentage of minorities? While 30% might not be a large fraction of the population 30% of 35,000 is an whole lot of people.

I am Asian and although the Penn State population is predominantly white would it be hard to fit in? I have many white friends and I love white people. Are there clubs that focus around race such as chinese club or japanese club?

No, State College isn’t a bunch of racist hicks and rednecks. It’s a college town. Like any college town, it tends to be more liberal than the area around it. Is it very white? Yes, PA as a whole tends to be pretty white. “White” does not automatically equal “racist hick”.

There are 69 clubs in the International/Multicultural category.

College Board shows PSU having 5% Asian students and 8% non-resident alien, the majority of which are Asian, putting the number closer to 10%.

The Borough of State College, which surrounds the campus, is a strongly democratic, with a democratic mayor and council. I would extremely surprised to see “lots of conservative racist hicks and rednecks there.”</state>

Thank you all very much for your help. It looks like Penn State is a diverse school, and I’m now very much looking forward to visiting it this summer.

If you are going to come this summer, make hotel reservations now! Arts Fest, Fourth Fest, Jazz Fest, spend a summer day…it’s a busy place! Mark me among the others who think comments about a lack of diversity here are ill informed.

My children went to public school here, with students from all over the world, of all faiths, colors, ethnic backgrounds…it’s the best part of life here. It is completely common to hear languages other than English ( Korean, Russian, Chinese, Croatian, Spanish, Japanese) inthe grocery store or at the Amish market . There’s an Islamic center, a synagogue, a Quaker school, a Russian orthodox church, large Catholic congregations and a large East Indian presence. A community program called Global Connections gives students from abroad a crash course in Amercian customs like how to cook a Thanksgiving dinner, and then the students and their cultural supports give monthly programs about their home culture. Is Pennsylvania predominantly white? yep. But that isnt the only measure of diversity.

PSU isn’t going to get any more diverse by avoiding it. You should consider it. BTW remember you words about seeking diversity. Don’t isolate yourself with only one group of people. Enjoy the wide range of people.

there is a function here where you can view every post someone makes. Click on the user name and then find more posts. Before xtremepower scares or discourages you, on ANY issue, please use this function. This confused boy/girl (immaturity deliberately applied) seems to make a lot of unsubstantiated claims about this university based on nothing. The tone of his other posts unrelated to PSU are also quite enlightening. Ask yourself, why would someone post over a 1000 posts since Nov 12?
Oddly, he/she claims to be attending PSU this fall. If you are so negative why accept? It’s not too late to go elsewhere.

^Woah. Sorry, I don’t worship PSU and if that personal attack was supposed to insult me, keep trying.

The OP mentioned that he wants to learn about different culture and religions.
