Hey everyone!
I was seriously considering Duke as my first choice when i heard there was very little racial interaction at Duke.
I know that there was the whole scandal with the lacrosse players but other than that, what is the social scene really like at Duke? cliques vs. campus family?
I guess this question is really for students who already attend Duke.

I guess im a little worried because I'm asian...

Are you going to be a senior next year?? If you consider Duke you might as well consider others like Yale or Havard ^_^
I mean if you really get in i think you'll be fine. Asians get along with others pretty well, especially if you are going to one of the top schools in america..... people should be pretty nice there (altho i'm not sure about the racial percentage and stuff) you can go to their website or something :P

Definitely read the link seahorse put up. I'm a racial minority, too, and I've never felt alienated. There are definite small racial cliques, but I avoid them and haven't had any problems outside of them.

i'm am in a religious minority (i'm jewish) and have not felt alienated. i have heard and felt some anti-semetism but no more than i do normally - it is a fact of life that this exists. i have learned to take it for what it is and ignore the ignorant people who use this language and promote these ideas. the best thing you can do is better your understanding of others in order to reduce the chance of racism, or any other type of discrimination, in the future - Duke is a great place to do this.

ah thanks for the link. ok good. i just read that according to princeton review's rankings, duke is one of the top colleges where there's "little racial interaction."

oh and seriously, the chances of me getting into yale/harvard are very very very slim anyways hah

I have no idea how princeton review ranks that, and am sure any method they use is decidely unscientific. I mean, how do you quantify racial interaction?

PR says Duke has little race reaction, but the NAACP said Duke is the number one top school for black students to attend in their annual survey - there is no such survey for other racial groups.

So, PR is probably less accurate then the NAACP atleast in regards to black students. Duke is 55% white, so it is fairly diverse. PR isn't scientific, not that you can quantify racial interaction anyways

As a racial minority, I can personally say that your Duke experience is what you make it. I have many friends of all races, but am active in the Black Student Assocation. There are times when the campus seems racially segregated, but we're all united as Blue Devils, which sounds terribly corny, but it's true. Befriend whoever you click with, whether they be similar to you in culture or religion or not. Duke gives all "Dukies" the chance to explore other cultures while embracing your own by offering different cultural groups and experiences such as performances, religious organizations, etc. Do not let the reputation of our school as very open or very closed to racial interaction affect how you interact with your future classmates.
