I've been reading up on Duke since I've gotten in and I've noticed many accounts of racial groups socially segregating themselves, especially among Asians and whites. I am personally Asian, but I've never really associated with other Asians - most of my friends are white or Hispanic. How true is the above comment at Duke?

bump... is that ^ true??

I disagree. Sure many different ethnic groups tend to stick together some of the time, but certainly not all the time. For instance, my fraternity which is pretty small has several asian members. If anything, I'd say when I go to Duke I was a bit surprised by the Black/White segregation and the historically african american fraternities and sororities. In the end, it's about what you make of your experiences, what you're involved in, etc. I'm sure others who are minorities at Duke on this board could do a better job than I could.

People always bring this up about Duke, and it has always confused me. Do people spend time with other people of the same race/heritage? Absolutely. There are Black, Jewish, Christian, Asian etc. clubs/social groups here just like nearly every other college in the country.

But from what I've seen/experienced the majority of people here don't think too much about race when hanging out with friends. Personally, my girlfriend since I've been here is Chinese and I'm Jewish. This is not uncommon at all. A community service club which I'm involved in here has just about every race/religion represented in our active membership. We also hang out a lot outside of the club.

One last example that this thread made me think of is tenting. I've tented in K-ville for 3 years now with a fairly solid core of friends. Thinking back, we were a very diverse group: white, black, Asian, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, very religious, not-so religious, engineers, science majors, humanities majors, liberal, conservative. I don't know if this post is making any sense, but basically different people do interact and are friends here. It's all a matter of personal preference.

that's good to know!! thanks gcards1 and duke25 :D

so albedo if u go to Duke and I go to Duke, we can be friends :D

Duke25 did a great job of summarizing things. I completely agree.

albedo, I am an Asian from the area around Duke. All of the Asians I know at Duke (both the nerdy scholars and the fraternity/sorority types) associate with people of all races.

Thanks for your input guys! :3 And yes I am attending Duke next year. Hope to see you there!

I didn't see any of this when I visitied Duke. My host, who was latino, had asian and white friends.
