Racism At GeorgiaTech

i'm an indian applying to georgia tech and have a 50/50 chance of getting thru
i've heard from a lot of people that theres a lot of racism in georgia and a lot of discrimination especially against asians
is this true???

honest responses would be appreciated

I think that nearly all colleges these days are so diverse, there's not a huge problem with racism. Plus the institutions of racism, sexism, and homophobia are dying a slow death with "Our" Southern generation, finally.

As for the general area, you might encounter some prejudice -- perhaps not outright racism in stores and restaurants, as it's mostly illegal. Asians and Indians are much less targets of prejudice than Blacks (among Whites).

Or at least that's how it is here in east TN. I imagine Georgia is much the same.

I doubt very much that GT itself would be racist in any way. GT is 15% Asian American, 10% African American, 5% Latin American and 5% international...and that's at the undergraduate level. The Graduate programs are even more diverse. I very much doubt that racism is an issue on campus. I am not sure about Altanta though.

Atlanta is one of the least racist cities in the country. Far less racist than Boston, for example.

Not to say that there aren't isolated incidents at Georgia Tech, but that would not be an issue in my mind.

Austinj--

Not to trivialize the poster's question, but you do realize that Indians are, in fact, Asian?

Atl's entire city and state gov is African American! Are you nuts?

As for Ga TEch, everyone from everywhere attends this school. It is for smart techies and people that are not caught up in things like racism, elitism and popularity.

If you want that, go to UGA!

Atlanta is a highly diverse city. There's even a large Jewish population.

Atlanta has a large Indian population and many great Indian restaurants. There is a mostly Indian neighborhood east of Buckhead.

What you have undoubtedly heard are false generalizations often made about many southern schools or states in general which really have no more "racism" than you might find almost anywhere in the US. Your bigger problem at GTech is going to be trying to figure out whether its professors who are overwhelming you with concepts and work are doing it for your benefit or, instead, because they are sadists.

There are only like 2.7% Jews or something like that at Georgia Tech. Compare that to other good schools- it's a tiny amount.

Jews don't seem to go into engineering as much as other majors.

"Not to trivialize the poster's question, but you do realize that Indians are, in fact, Asian?"

Hmmm, does this mean Canadians are North Americans!?!

Sorry, I suppose I should have worded my sentence for OCDers and high-minded authoritarians:

"Asians and, moreover, Indians are much less targets of prejudice than Blacks (among Whites)."

And upon what are you basing this?

I'm going into engineering, haha. I know many other Jews going into engineering as well, I don't think it's at all uncommon. MIT has 9% Jews and RPI has 12% Jews, don't feel like going through all the big engineering school but those both have a lot of engineers.

For an elite school 9% Jews is low. How about at Cal Tech?

Cal Tech--about 5% Jewish

Well something else to consider is that MIT and CalTech are both 27% Asian, while GATech is only 15%. So GA Tech doesn't seem to have that many minorities in comparison. I wouldn't say 9% is very low (most of the schools I applied to seemed to have 10-12%), but 5% is low. Since CalTech is so small it may not be a good school to use for comparison.

No you won't find much racism at GT. My friend who went there who is Puerto Rican never did anyway. Atlanta is a great place with many different races.

thanks for the info guys....though the jewish stuff wasnt of any use to me.

anyway i thought as much...i mean how can any good school in a major city have any racism right.
