what's the process of becoming a radio DJ at hopkins? do you just join or are you chosen?

what's the process of being a part of the radio station in general?

how can you become a writer on the jhu newspaper? to become an editor or editor in chief, you have to have been a part of the paper for a while, right?

i'm not apart of the radio, but am an editor on the news-letter.
(several of the news-letter editors are also radio dj's, actually.)

the process for becoming a writer is fairly simple, it's completely on a volunteer basis. there are different sections to volunteer for, and some writers do end up volunteering for different sections but most stick to/grow into niche.

usually, the best way to become an editor is to write for the paper your freshman year, and run for a position and the end of the year. dedication and commitment in addition to turning in stories on time are probably the most important things.

i had a somewhat (very) untraditional path, and am actually an editor on two sections as a freshman. which i don't believe has happened before.

however, if you are very interested in all things with the newspaper (the environment is a blast, very worth looking into) i'd highly recommend sending an e-mail over to news.letter@jhu.edu and a managing editor or editor-in-chief can tell you about the paper in greater detail since they've been a part of it for 3-4 years.

in joining the paper as a freshman, were you absolutely overwhelmed or were you able to handle your schedule? did you still have time for your classes and other extracurriculars?

basically i'm asking how much time it takes on a weekly/daily/whatever basis to be an editor or writer

i'm really not one for "floaty" responses, but in all honesty, it takes as much time as you're willing to give. if you volunteer for an article (or more) every week, that'll keep you pretty busy. if you volunteer for an article every other week, or once per month, that shouldn't be too bad at all. being an editor does take up a sizeable chunk of time, but again, each section requires a different amount of effort/time.

personally, i wasn't/am still not overwhelmed (still a frosh -- 1st semester went by reallly fast), but still haven't shaken off the high school habit of not enough sleep -- although, my earliest classes are at 12, which helps ; ) everyone's different though, so the above paragraph is a better reference.

that said, many of the editors are also very involved with other extra-curriculars/research.

hopkins is nice in that it allows you a lot of freedom: how many credits you take per semester, etc. if you have any questions at all, feel free to pm me or just reply to the thread haha

also, the hopkins interactive is a very useful and helpful tool to learn about hopkins from the perspectives of a somewhat diverse body of profiles -- check out the blogs whenever you're procrastinated the hell outta collegeconfidential
