Hi all! I applied RD to this major/program in the School of Communications. I was wondering if anyone knows how competitive the major is and if they focus more on EC than SAT/GPA.
SAT is LOW. I am taking it again in January and aiming for a 2100, but right now my stats, as far as I know, are not competitive for Northwestern.
However, as far as ECs go I think I am a competitive application. I did NYU's Summer Film Program, I intern at a local Television station, I'm director of my school's morning announcements...right now I'm working on two film competitions outside of school...As far as I know, I'm taking advantage of every opportunity that is available to me.
I hate to call this a chance thread (I'm completely aware that Northwestern is a long shot for me.) I guess I'm just looking for some advice on the major...and whether it would be a better education than Emerson College for this field (as far as jobs after college, etc.)

Also, totally unrelated, do you need a car to get around in Northwestern/Evanston? Sounds silly but this is a big factor in my college decision process...Thanks!

Can’t comment with specificity about this major, although my son’s roomie is an RTVF guy. I do think it’s a pretty competitive major.

As for a car, absolutely no need for it. Some of the on campus housing is within a 5 minute walk of downtown Evanston. Evanston is a great college town and totally walkable.

My S just got in ED as RTVF major. He had ECs similar to yours and had done a similar summer film program at UCLA. He had won several film festivals so if you do win anything, send that into NU ASAP. He won a huge competition right after his ED application went in and he sent a letter to them explaining the win. He took the ACT but his comparable score was higher than 2100 so I am not sure what affect your test scores will have. He looked at many conservatory programs but ultimately wanted a film program within a liberal arts program. He wanted to join a fraternity, possibly dabble in other things and take classes in other departments. He spoke to several film profs when he visited and was very impressed. NU was a great combination and the perfect fit for him. Good luck.

Thank you!
@Alliesmom I will be sure to send them a letter (just a standard typed letter explaining the competition?) if I get any sort of recognition in the film competitions. I’m glad I have that option, I was upset at first that the competitions were not something I could include in my application.

No you don’t need a car. But if you’re below 2000 and not a URM you have pretty much 0 chance. And unless you were averaging ABOVE 2100 on practice tests, and you hadn’t practiced at all prior to the first sitting of the SAT, you have an icicles chance in hell of admission (since you haven’t cured cancer, won a major national or international competition, or donated large sums of money).

Alrighty thanks for that advice.
