Raise 700-720 Math up to 800 or so?

Hey guys,

I keep scoring between 690 - 730 on the Math portion of the SAT. Generally what seems to happen is that I get 700-720 Math, 750+ Writing, and 700-720 Critical Reading. I'm really trying to pull both Math/CR to 750+ each so I can break 2250+ on the actual SAT.

I'm a senior, and this October is the last SAT I can take. I really need to do well on this. Anyways, how can I improve my low 700 math score up to the high 700's/800 level? I took AP Calculus as a junior, but I'm garbage at SAT math LOL.

ANYWAYS - Please recommend strategies/books to go over to improve from ~710 to ~800.

Here are some things I've heard may help, but I've actually heard mixed thoughts on them:
- Grubers SAT Guide's Math Section -Some say it helps, others say its to get into the 650 range
- Dr. Chung's - Heard it's hard with vague solutions or something
- PWN the SAT - Heard it's too easy

So yeah, guys, please provide suggestions on how to go from ~710 to ~800 on SAT I Math. Thanks!

In my opinion the Grubers math guide is a REALLY hard! The questions make you think outside the box and usually consist of multiple steps. If you ace that book then you should do excellently on the SAT! I would recommend it! It’s more suited for Honors/AP children but I’m sure if you are in a regular class it could help! :)

I definitely recommend PWN the SAT. I wouldn’t say it’s too easy. It’s probably a bit harder than the actual test, on average. But its techniques are solid, and it teaches you the best ways to actually take the test.

It raised my score from a 640 to a 790. I missed one question, which was an easy one I made a careless mistake on, something PWN the SAT devotes a whole section to trying to stop you from doing.

Alright, well a buddy gave me a copy of Gruber’s already. Thing is, IDK if I want to buy PWN the SAT. Do you truly recommend it? It’s $30, which is a lot for a prep book (I’m used to them being around $10-$15 lol).

That said, I’m definitely willing to purchase it if it will truly help me go from about 710 to ~800.

BTW - How should I improve Critical Reading? Just practice tests? (I’m fine on vocab, I have trouble with long/double passages) I usually get around 700.

^Yes. I attribute my success on my math section to it. Also if you ask the author (he’s sometimes on this board, or on the the PWN the SAT blog) he will probably give you a discount code (well maybe not, since he has to make money from it somehow. He occasionally gives out codes for it though). Actually I have an old code he gave me that I didn’t use because shipping would have made it too expensive anyway here. I’m not sure if the code would work still, but I could PM it to you if you’re interested.

And I’m not the best person to ask for advice on CR. I got a 660 two tests in a row and never got higher. That’s mostly because I didn’t study much for it though. Anyway, practicing it and really understanding the patterns of questions it asks you and how to find the answers is probably the best way to go. I found that Erica Meltzer’s blog had a lot of helpful tips (for writing too). Maybe check that out.

Ordered the book!
