Hello everyone, im going to 10th grade next month and im gonna pride myself to get nothing but 4.0s from now on. i just wanted to know if its possible to get a 3.8 by senior year. Right now i have a cumulative GPA of 3.2. im taking 2 AP classes and all honors next year. if i take 4 AP classes and all honors in my junior year with a 4.0 and take 3 AP classes and all honors in my senior year with a 4.0 again. Will i be able to get a 3.8?
We don’t know what your school’s weight is for AP but you should be able to figure this out (as a 4.0 student ) if you write it out for each semester and average it.
Let’s say you take 6 classes a year and you get 2 grades for each class. So that’s 12 semesters. 12 is your denominator. So if you had all As, you would have 48 (12 semesters x 4) as your numerator. 48/12=4.0. You had 3.2-ish, so 3.2 x 12 =~ 38. So for around 3.2 (3.16 actually) GPA, your numerator is 38.
So if you got all As in 10th and 11th grade, the calculation would be ( 38 + 48 + 48 ) / (12 + 12 + 12) =~ 3.72
If you go all As in 10th, 11th and 12th, your unweighted GPA would be ( 38 + 48 + 48 + 48 ) / 48 =~ 3.79. So yes with all As, assuming 6 classes per year, your unweighted would almost get to 3.8 by the end of 12th grade.
Note that for weighted GPA, if your school gives you added weight for classes, extra points would just be added on to the numerator, making your GPA higher.
I would ask your counselors. Every school seems to have a different weighting system. Also, your school might send your unweighted score in addition to your weighted score, so make sure to do well in your classes!
