Raising 10th Grade PSAT (193) ???

Last October, I took the PSAT as a sophomore (all 10th graders do at my school) and scored 193. My specific scores per section were: Critical Reading- 63, Writing- 74, Math- 56. Part of the reason that my Math score was so low was because I took Algebra I my Freshman year, and had barely any knowledge of Geometry in the Fall.

I wanted to know how to improve my score in my Junior Year, and what study tips/books people used over the summer to prepare. My goal is to be in the National Merit/National Achievement (I'm African American) range. However, I live in Maryland and minimum scores are often some of the highest in the nation.

What tips do you have for preparing for the PSAT over the summer?
Would it be smarter to buy a review book that focuses solely on the PSAT, or should I buy one for the SAT?
In what ways can I work to improve my math score over the summer (for free, can't pay to take classes) and meet the National Merit scores?

Thanks!

Read the pinned topics and work through Silverturtle’s guide. PSAT prep is just like SAT prep, except that it’s a much shorter exam. I think you’ll need 220+ to make NM from Maryland but that’s definitely achievable. I had the same score in 10th grade and made NM from Florida my junior year. Good luck! :)

and look at Xiggis guide.

Did you double up with Geometry and Algebra 2 Sophmore year?
There are not a lot of CB PSAT Practice Tests. Google. 2009, 2010, 2011. You will find a few. Stay from those sites that want email address, etc.
That said, stay away from Kaplan or Princeton Review PSAT books. Been there done that.
Put together a study plan and test plan. When will you be taking the SAT test? Any AP tests? Any Subject tests?
If you want 1 comprehensive study guide for PSAT, I recommend Barrons or McGraw Hill.
Since Math seems to be your weakness, check out all the Math problems on Khan Academy. They have from Easy to Hard (1 to 5). Go to SAT Quantum dot com for video answers on Every math question College Board has in public domain.
If you want subject study guides for Math. Pwnthesat or Barrons Math.
Go to critical reader website as lots of info on her site for critical reading and writing. You don’t need to buy the books as your scores look solid.
Read, Read, Read. Non-fiction books during the summer. Critical Reader website has a list.
Vocabulary, Vocabulary, Vocabulary. Princeton Review Wordsmart or Direct Hits.

Your goal is to use the PSAT as if its the real thing. Study hard for it. When you get your scores back in December. Then you can kick your SAT studying into high gear assuming you will take your first test in March.

Thanks @An0maly, @grandscheme, & @TomsRiverParent !!!
