Raising 5 points in 6 weeks?

I FEEL like we have a financial need, but unfortunately we did not qualify except for a loan. My daughter is a freshman this year and we were not able to get any financial assistance. My 23 year old is finished now, but we did not qualify for her either. She chose not to pursue a higher degree and has finished. I am hoping this time around that MAYBE we might qualify for something having 2 in college at the same time but I am not holding my breath. I used a Net Price calculator based on 2 children in school and still nothing! So frustrating! That is why I am searching so hard for options. My daughter was fortunate to have her freshman year paid with a dance scholarship, pageant money she earned and a small loan. I am sure she will have her sophomore year paid as well with a dance scholarship (tuition only) and hopefully scholarships she may earn with a good GPA this year. So far she is doing well and has a 3.5.

As for my son, he is doing great in all of his classes - I check his grades 3 times a week online (to make sure he is turning in assignments because we have had issues in the past so I like to stay on top of this) and he has all As and 1 B. But he has really only been putting in 45 minutes to an hour a night because that’s about all I can get him to do and I do not want to burn him out. I have decided to not push quite as hard since in reality we still have a whole year left.

You would think by now I would have this down with 2 others in college already, but their process was pretty simple. Although that was probably because I really had no idea what I was doing then … not that I really do now, but I am trying

By the time my 7 year old is this age I will be ready! I hope!!!

Just a quick update … With another week of studying behind him my don went up another 3 points on the practice test today!!! 29!
E- 26
M- 29
R- 27
S -35!!! Yay! We are chugging along! Hoping this wasn’t a fluke!

He did run out of time on English and left 5 blank though

Son not don. Stupid phone

WEEK 3 update … he took practice test #3 today in The Real ACT and we saw an increase again!

Composite 30
Eng - 32
Math - 30
Reading - 28
Science - 30

of course I was a little sad to see the drop from the 35 last week in Science but we are THRILLED!! A 30! 5 point increase after 3 weeks of studying and 3 practice tests! Here is hoping it continues to climb and he scores at least a 32 on the real test in December!

Hi, I am currently in the same boat as your son and I was wondering how many hours I should study a night to recieve a 30+?

Thanks!

I suppose it varies from person to person. He studies 4 nights a week for about an hour and then 1 full timed practice test each Saturday.

Good for him.I am following the same schedule and am making progress. I went from a 22 to a 26 on my practice tests.

How did your son do on his practice test today?

He didnt take one this weekend. He was sick with a bad head cold for 3 days and really couldn’t concentrate on studying. He took a 4 day break last week and we picked it back up today. We are going to do a practice test Wednesday and then he has another one 8 am Saturday at school. I am hoping he does well, but he is starting to show signs of burn out lol He needs a little break I think!

How does your son think he did?

HORRIBLE!! he came home and said “that was the hardest ACT I have ever taken. The math was a little harder than usual and science was just ridiculous. I had to guess on at least 7 or 8 of them. I am going to take a nap, my brain hurts”

But he said he felt like he did well on English. I am not sure about Reading, he didnt say!

The science was very, very hard

That’s how he felt too. I just hope by some miracle he did ok. He will be very discouraged if he bombs it after all the prep work he did the past 6 weeks.

YES! The science was EXTREMELY HARD.

Now to decide before Thursday if he felt he did so bad that we should cancel the scores and try again … that is hard though, because we dont know what the curves will be and if he guessed well enough on the ones he didnt know!! Reading and Science he ran out of time and guessed C/H for the last 5-6. I just feel so bad for him. He really did work hard to try to prepare this time. He looked like someone beat him with a 2x4 when he walked in the door yesterday after the test :(

I highly recommend not cancelling your son’s score. What if he scored a 32 like he wanted? I say, don’t cancel and see what he gets. Take a solid 3 weeks off from training and relax. His guesses could’ve been good guesses so PLEASE do not cancel.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I really wasnt sure and we had chosen 4 schools to send them to so I was nervous about them getting the score if it was low. But you are right … you just never know!!

Well I am not sure how I feel … he only went up 1 point. He got a 26. BUT I feel like I should be relieved he didnt drop after his reactions to the test haha … back to the drawing board.

did he sig up for the February test?

Which part of Mississippi are you from? I’m on the Gulf Coast.

Sorry that this is irrelevant. I’m just curious.
