Hey everyone!
I'm new to this website, so I wasn't exactly sure where to put this thread. If I should move it somewhere else just let me know.

So here is my question....

I'm a junior in high school. The first semester is over. We haven't gotten our final grades yet, but last quarter I ended up with a 3.46 gpa, so that's probably what I'll have this time as well. I REALLY want to raise my gpa to a 3.5 before I submit my college applications this fall, so I guess you could say I have around 3 school quarters to do so. Do you think there is any chance at all I can do this? I've heard its SUPER hard to raise your cumulative, but I've seen people on this website post about how they had a 3.2 but raised it to like a 3.5. I'm also taking an ap class and two honors classes this year, and will probably do the same my senior year.

Answers are much appreacited! Thanks:)

Most colleges that care whether you have a 3.5 GPA will also require at least some rudimentary math skills, as well as perhaps some minimal critical thinking and problem solving abilities.

Hint. 5 semesters @ (insert your cumalitive GPA here) + 1 semester @ X (solving for X = semester grades needed second semester junior year) / 6 semesters (total number of semesters ) = 3.5 GPA cumalative

((5 x current GPA cumalitive) + x)/6=3.5
or
(5 x current GPA cumalitive) + x)=21
or
x=21-(5 x current GPA cumaltive)
or
grades needed second semester Jr Year to bring your cumalitive GPA to 3.5 = 21-(5 x current GPA cumaltive)

I’m not exactly sure what “21” means?

@mchalupax3: i have the same problem ! same average and everything . but what classes do you take ?

@hinsdale1: im so confused …

If you want to know what your GPA will be by Senior Year use this formula:

(Frosh GPA * number of credits you took freshman year + Sophomore GPA * credits taken sophomore year + Junior GPA* credits taken junior year + 1st Semester of Senior Year GPA * credits taken first semester of senior year / (add up all the credits you took) = your UW GPA

@adababy845 freshmen and sophomore year I took all regular classes, even though I was smart enough to take honors:/ this year I’m taking AP US History, Honors Spanish 2, and Honors British Literature. The rest are regular level. Senior year I plan to take another AP and 2 honors courses, hopefully more! I go to a really good private school though, so I’m hoping that helps! How about you, what are you taking?

@applebeam thank you! i’ll try that formula out.

just like you, i took all regular classes fresh and soph . now i take honors spanish 3, college pre-calc and the rest are regular and im gonna take an online AP psychology class for spring. senior year ill prbly take AP gov, AP english, college spanish and AP bio. the rest will be regular .

i reeeeeallllly hope they bring up my gpa :(

^ 21 is a number?

You’re making it harder than it needs to be.

For example, if your current cumulative GPA is 3.46 right now (as of end of 1st semester jr year) then:

“grades needed second semester Jr year to bring your cumalitive GPA to 3.5” = 21-(5 x 3.46)

=21-(5 x 3.46)
or
=21-(17.3)
or
=3.7

In this case you would need a 3.7 GPA your second semester jr year in order to bring your cummulative GPA from 3.46 up to 3.5.

@adababy845 thats really good! yea I’m sure it will, just get as many As as you can, especially in the AP classes! This year is really important for us, so if the colleges see that we are challenging ourselves and doing well in hard classes everything will be good the thing is that our gpa isn’t bad at all, I just feel like a 3.5 is secure you know?

@hindsale1 oh ok I see what you mean now! I’m sorry I was just confused because of all the numbers haha. Ok so your saying that if by the end of junior year I have a 3.7 average i can bring my gpa up to a 3.5? Wow! that makes me feel really good, especially since I got a 3.83 first quarter :D

Thats not exactly what i was saying, because your original post is not exactly clear. What I provided was simply an example IF your cummalitve GPA was 3.46. Your original post says your LAST QUARTER grades were 3.46. But you did not specify what you actual cummulative GPA is for your entire high school career (this number is obviously on your grade reports).

You need to plug what your actual current cumulative GPA is as of mid-year (semester) of this year in place of the 3.46 number I used in the example… then the formula will calculate the grades you will need second semester in order to bring your cummulative GPA up to 3.5.

Also , this is relatively basic algebra. I hope you will have an opportunity to brush up on your math skills prior to college or you may be somewhat overwhelmed.

@hindsale1 my cumulative gpa IS a 3.46, what I meant is that after my last quarter grades were in (which was a 3.83), my cumulative was a 3.46. I’m sorry, I should’ve been more specific. As for the math, the equation makes more sense after closely looking at it, and you don’t have to worry, I’m getting an A in algebra:)
