My daughter got her first C in high school. She feels she might as well have gotten a D. Then she could retake the class for a higher grade. Is this true? Is there a way to raise the C in French 3?

Talk to her guidance counselor. Some schools will allow a class to be re taken and the grade expunged.

In other school systems, though, if a student chooses to repeat a course, the two grades are averaged – and of course, the student only receives credit once.

Still, if the student plans to go on to French 4, repeating the course probably would be a good idea. A student with a C in French 3 is likely to be inadequately prepared for French 4.

Are they even permitted to repeat a class in which they got a C (or even a D - which is passing) in HS? This one C has a relatively small impact on her GPA. You can do the calculations yourself to see what the effect is when all the other classes’ grades from all the years or even just the years 10/11 are included.

It seems overboard to me to try to repeat a class in which one received a C just to get a higher GPA even if it’s permitted. People play this game in college sometimes to try to have the ultra-high GPA for med school apps or something but I don’t think it s/b done for a C in HS. Instead she should focus on why she received the C in the first place (subject, teacher, illness during a major test, lack of studying, too much workload in other classes, etc.) and see what can be done to try to not receive another in the future.

I agree, ucsducladad. This isn’t a catastrophic failure, just a minor bump in the road. Accept it, learn from it, move on.

Thanks for asking this question because I was wondering myself! If retaking the class would reinforce the material and prove readiness for the next sequential class (for example, in a language, or in math), does it make sense to retake the class? I was looking at online classes for this purpose to take over the summer.

My child also just received 1st c. He is taking an online course to review the material and boost the grade. My understanding is that at his school the 2 grades get averaged. This is for math. It may seem over the top, but his grade dropped from a B+ to a C in six weeks, due to not completing homework. I felt that this was not acceptable, both the grade drop and the lack of effort. Anyway, he agreed to take the class, and hopefully learned a lesson.

I think it must depend on the school district. In ours I was told that when a class was taken a second time it just counted as an audit. I don’t know what happens if the initial grade is an F.
