Hi all! I was just having a few questions about high school life in general. One of them being... If I tried to raise money for a debate team, but since I am a sophomore, would it look "bad" to join junior year? I started speech this year (sophomore year) and I like it, but I really want to know what debate is like! The student services people say I can't start it due to financial reasons, but I was thinking about raising money by myself and started it! Maybe a summer job?

Also, I go to the gym pretty much every day... And I know I'm thinking quite in the long run, but should I acknowledge that in my applications and what not? What if I come out as a stuck up person? I think that's one of the ways to distinguish me from any other Asian applicant, though!

First off, go ahead and join the debate team. If you enjoy it that much and believe you will have the funds for it, don’t rob yourself of the opportunity just because you think it will look “bad”. A summer job is a win win situation because you’ll be making money and be able to put it on your college application.
As for the gym, leave it out of your application. Unless you’re becoming a certified trainer or something of the sort, it isn’t really relevant. Maybe include it in your college essays where it is appropriate, but don’t push it too much. Good luck!

Could I perhaps put it in an essay? It might be a determination thing because I started out… William Taft… Then became this person who freaks people out when I flex ;)! I think it has really shaped who I am, so would it be relevant enough for an essay perhaps? Thanks!

I actually would refrain from putting it into your essays. My Lit teacher told me that college essays should stay away from being about determination and persistence, because those are the MOST common written about things, and by doing so, you are not making yourself unique.

In general life lessons are a pretty bad idea unless you were born in less than bad circumstances (third world country, compton, etc)

Actually, you are only a sophomore, worry about your essay later, and at my high school we have a debate club and it isn’t anything special.
