I do ok on all the other sections(English-31 Math-28 Reading-30) of the ACT but for some reason Science just overwhelms me. I get confused and run out of time. I love science at school and always get like 100's on my tests and stuff but I just can't do well on the ACT Science section. I want to go into pre-med but I only have a 23 in science and I'm sure it looks bad (I've taken it twice and got a 23 both times..I know..It's bad... I'm really ashamed)

Is anyone else like me with the Science section? I feel like a complete idiot? Does anyone know how I can significantly raise my science score?(tips, strategies, prep book, ANYTHING!!!) Sorry I'm just a little stressed (lol)

The first time I took a 'full-length' practice ACT test I scored a 20 in science. It was frustrating because I am in AP bio this year and I am pretty much acing the class. I also had honors chem and honors bio, so I was wondering why I was doing so poorly.

The truth is that the science ACT isn't truly "science." It's graph-reading and interpreting. So bascially, it's another reading section that is geared towards science. Granted, if the passage is about photosynthesis or DNA, and you have some prior knowledge of the topic, then it is to your advantage. But you truly don't need to know ANYTHING at all relating to science. You just need to know how to take the test and how to answer the questions.

I picked up Princeton Review after improving a little bit on the Dec test (I got a 26 in science) and ended up with a 29 in science on the Feb test.

I had a similar problem as you in my case. I got a 27 on the science in a practice ACT my school offered, but after learning some tips I raised it to a 34 on the Feb. 12 Test.

Don't get confused by big words and terms. Always look for the exat word in the question, XXXXXXXX, and then look for XXXXXXXXX in the paragraph, table, or graph. It doesn't matter if the word is skalapunkafu or fish. There is really no comprehension involved in the science section. It is all about transfering information (doesn't actually use any science).

Also, never read anything in its entirety. There is so much irrelevant information. Practice how to read graphs if that is a weakness for you. Always read the questions first.

Thank you all! I feel better now that I'm not the only one! Do you know the best test prep books for science practice?

My boyfriend got a 35 in science. HE didn't do any prep and said I just need to READ READ READ..especially the newspaper and other things. Does anyone recommend any specific things to read?

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are two great newspapers to read for test prep. They're extremely well written, but they also don't pull any punches, so the content of their articles can be pretty complex. Try reading science articles, and even financial articles, which are often filled with unfamiliar jargon, just like the SAT and ACT.
