Hi everyone,
I just received two emailed fee waivers to W&L and Wash St. Louis. I really don’t know why. My academic records aren’t at all up to par for those two, W&L is a target but only because of my SAT score and WashU is a reach. I also definitely don’t need them financially.
The only reason I can think of is I added the schools to my common app (I was going to apply anyway)
But if that’s the case, why would they essentially rob themselves of BOTH a free $70~ and the chance to likely reject someone and lower their acceptance rate
It seems like they cheated themselves out of a good deal there. No complaints, just saying if I was them I would definitely not send ME a fee waiver.
So is this something that happens to everyone?
Maybe incentivizing students to apply? But then again I was already going to apply and they know that since I think they can see I added them to my common app. Really just makes no sense to me. I know for certain they didn’t specifically select me and go like ‘what an exemplary student, how about we send this fella a fee waiver’. If they even took one look at my transcript which I already sent them they’d send me a rejection letter before I even applied
My D also received a couple of “complimentary” waivers after campus tours before the shut-down and after a virtual tour or interview (I don’t remember which). We did not request them and just assumed it was something the schools did as a show of appreciation for your time and interest. We didn’t read into it. My D did acknowledge it with a short thank you to the AO.
ETA: W&L was one of those schools so maybe that is a common practice for them?

Maybe y’all have a demographic or geographical distinction those schools want to attract.

I don’t expect so in our case but who knows?
Could very well be. Wash U and W&L are both schools which certainly don’t have money problems
You might be onto something there. I live in VA, but W&L is private so I don’t see how that would offer me any advantage.
A good friend of mine is a freshman there now and word on the street there is the school is trying very hard to up their ‘diversity’ points so that might explain the waiver from them (I am not white)

Not personalized as far as I know. Email just directs me to indicate on my application that I received a fee waiver.
Honestly even without the waiver with the click of a single button you could still technically waive yourself, although I would advise against it because on the chance they do check those things (which is probably not as small as you think since they are a LAC) that would likely be grounds for immediate denial. Not worth $60
