random math question

This was on the Feb 9th ACT science section but since the SAT board is more popular, I decided to post here.

If you have ratios and it's going 24/3, 24/4, 24/5, 24/6, is it increasing or decreasing?

I put it is increasing because you can't divide ratios.

This is a weird question. I always thought ratios were really fractions and if that is true then it would be decreasing but I see what you mean.
Hmm...I really think it's decreasing because as the numbers increase the simplified ratio is decreasing but that is just my opinion.

Lol, so what is the correct answer?

i would say decreasing too, but i don't really know.

Question and Answer service wasn't available for the Feb ACT so...=/

Decreasing, duh

Yeah, ummmmm, it's definitly decreasing. I don't know what the controversy is.................. The number on the bottom is increasing, which will make the whole ratio decrease.

say, tangent is the ratio. if it's going 24/3, 24/4, 24/5, 24/6, its surely decreasing.

If you can use a calculator on the ACT, why not just divide all those #s? I can just look and see that 24/4=6 and 24/6=4, so you know it's decreasing.

but I thought ratios weren't dividable. On a certain SAT question, I don't remember exactly what it said but there was a ratio question and I simplified it and got the answer wrong.

Rahoul, it was on the science section so we cant use calculators.

Ratios are divisible. Even if they aren't, 24 to 6 compared to 24 to 3 certainly means that there would be less of Item A for every item B.

normally this question would seem easy, but the time pressure of the ACT really gets to you just like the SAT I'm sure since you only have 60 minutes for all 60 math questions in one sitting. I don't know about science, but the time limit still puts a huge strain.

Er, it's decreasing.

Just look at the ratios. 24/3=8. 24/4=6. 24/6=4.

8>6>4.

It's decreasing.

Don't think of it as dividing. Think of it as reducing. They're all reducible.

24/3 = 8/1
24/4 = 6/1
24/6 = 4/1

24:3 means 24/27
24:4 means 24/28
24:5 means 24/29
decreasing
