We’re all in. That part’s over with, but what do we do once we get there? To those who have finished their 1st year at Penn (or beyond), what general rules of advice would you give? I’ve heard:

-take a writing seminar your first semester
-econ classes should generally be taken during the spring because Whartonites screw up the curve in the fall

Why would Whartonites screw up the curve in this case?

First, we are all smart. Secondly, if a Whartonite actually knows somethng about Economics, they probably took AP Econ and passed out of it, so you wouldn't have to worry about their competition.

I'm not in Wharton, and I also agree that they do not screw up the curve. Don't let anyone trick you into thinking that either. You can easily get an A in Econ, it all depends on the amount of effort you put into the class.

Other tips:
Participate in some club.
take a fine arts class
don't walk around by urself at night far 4rm campus
explore philly
take psyc001 (shatte will be leaving veeeery soon)

if i am not wrong all wharton students now have to take a different econ class that is specifically for them. students from other schools can now take econ 1 and 2 with less fear.

yes, ugh it's ghetto. anyway, they have to take econ010, so don't worry about them in 001 and 002, although you really never had to.

switch over to the liberty plan, maybe the blue if you're in hill. Most people will end up wasting 30 meals as they expire at the end of the semester. Might as well have more dining dollars.

get out of your room and go outside (for people like me)

on that note, don't play WoW in college (i knew ppl who were hermits)

definitely get off campus and explore philly

take a bus to nyc for the weekend... if you can't find a friend who lives there (and you most likely will) pool together for a motel.

Go somewhere spring break.

don't worry if you're in hill

Easy. You go out and have fun. You then come back and realize you will be up till 9am writing the 10 pg paper you haven't started that is due tomorrow.

I was just going to say... but yes, there is no other way to learn, and some people never do. But try to err on the side of party than on the side of being a bookworm. You regret the former the morning after, but you'll regret the latter for the rest of your life

"-econ classes should generally be taken during the spring because Whartonites screw up the curve in the fall"

that is the worst piece of advice anyone has ever given in the history of life. advisers say this and it is flat out wrong. I know a girl who took this advice and waited until spring semester to take it and then she really liked it and decided she wanted to major in it. but thank to the advice she is a class "behind" what she could have been. i took it in the fall and it wasn't that difficult. Whartonites aren't any better than anyone else. I do better than most of them in micro and macro.

the only advice i can give is not to sit on the bench with the benjamin franklin statue. i have personally peed on it atleast 5 times.

best hint ever if you are on a budget and are taking math/science classes. Don't buy the books early, worrying that they'll run out. If they do, your profs are lenient and give you one or two hw free weeks. And chances are, they may let you buy previous versions of textbooks or show alternate texts. I saved $200+ in chem and math by buying previous/alternate versions
