I know this is way in advance, but I like to look at Tufts related things in the future to pass the time. I am going to be a freshman this Fall, and I have been flipping through the course book. So, about classes: I was just wondering how many classes a typical student would take, especially being a freshman. I assume a good number would be 5? With that being said, I know the University Wind Ensemble (for example) can count as a class for credit. Would you consider this as one of the 5 classes a person would take in a semester?
Thanks. I know I'll found out in time, so it's not essential, but it's fun to ponder things.

4 is the ‘standard’ number of classes; 5 is not uncommon but nobody thinks 4 classes is “weak” by any means, especially if they are tough. Of course you hear about the kids taking 6 and a half credits and I’m sure some people do but that’s pretty crazy.
As a freshman you have the wonderful opportunity to drop out of classes without any record quite far into the semester, so I recommend signing up for 5 and dropping 1 if you need to.
You will have a limit of 5 credits a semester that can be lifted with permission from somebody (probably a dean) so technically that credit will count as a class but if you think you can swing 5 more classes then you can do it with approval.

kipdrunner got it spot on, except the limit is 5.5 credits (not 5) for arts & science students. For engineers it’s 6.5, and the standard amount of classes is 5.

My son took 4 last term and was overworked. This term he took 4.5 and it was about right. It really depends on the courses.
