How do you people become "tutors?" I want to be a spanish tutor to teach little kids.. how/what do you guys do in order to become tutors? sign some papers? go to the city hall to get permission?

do it through the school. you could totally start a club like people did in my school--they go to the middle school and tutor younger kids.. all they had to do was talk to the principal about it and talk to the middle school principal/teachers--its working really well. i personally tutor other hs kids as part of national honors society--the guidance counselor contacts NHS students when they someone is getting bad grades and needs a tutor.

I did it at the local community center. I was awesome and I got attached to the kids (1st&2nd graders) so when it was time to go, I didn't inform them.

Look into community centers and after-school programs. :)

I'm a Spanish tutor... I went to my tenth grade teacher and offered my help... she gladly accepted

thank you everybody for the info. butterfly, what you are doing is what i exactly want to do. so do you want me to first visit the local community park? once you did, how did you get to "recruit" the kids to get involved? do you just ask the community center people to make flyers or announcements posted on boards or something?

I did it for free, FYI, b/c I don't care about the money-- I just loved doing it. :)

Okay, well, I don't know where you are from, but I have to tell you-- if you're in NYC, you're lucky because there are tutoring programs EVERYWHERE.

What I did was went to my local community center and filled out an application. I was filling out an application for "anything" but I made known that I loved kids and that it would be fun. This, I did with the director of the Community Center. Then, I met with the lady who did the after-school program a couple of weeks later. She asked me several questions and she told me to "start tomorrow", lol. I worked with 4 kids at a time and it was me, one other HS kid, and 2 college interns -- they got hard to handle sometimes but it was an awesome experience.

You will not regret it at all.

You should look into
(a) after-school programs at local elementary schools,
(b) community centers,
(c) neighborhoods with many "struggling students"

My friends tutor little kids now, but they tutor for $$ and I could never imagine myself doing that so I didn't take that job. I mean, I don't think someone should be paid to teach a child how to read. :)

I live in SoCal. Unfortunately, to find neighborhoods with struggling students, I might have to travel 10-15 min from here and I know that place, but completely unfamiliar. I'll try the local community park and ask any of the desk attendants, if possible. Wow, im impressed that in NYC and in your case, it was so easy to start a tutoring program! i don't think it will be the same case here, but i hope it will. i also love kids and take great care and like to have fun with them. i have confidence that i can handle them well as well as teach them.

how's your schedule?

I tutor both with clubs at my school, and with my county's library system which has a free tutoring service at certain libraries. call your local library and ask if they have a program or if you could start one.

I was approached by the NHS sponsor/my English teacher and asked to tutor the kids I tutor now. You could check with your Spanish department/teachers and see if any parents have contacted them about needing tutors. Or post a small flyer at your local library or community center, you know, one of those you can take a number off the bottom (e-mail nowadays).

irishdancer- ill consider that. thanks. i hope they can let me start a Spanish tutoring program in the children's corner of the library.
onsilverwings- flyers' good idea. i should definitely do that after i get my permission to teach.

i was a tutor last year. My bio prof asked if i could be a tutor and i agreed. Kind of weird since i'm not a bio major

btw, im not considering being a school tutor,, tutoring hs students. i'd like to teach kids.
