Random Questions About Orientation, Roommates, and College Life

Hey Guys! I just have a lot of questions and I was hoping you guys could help me out.
I know that some if these questions are stupid but i would really appreciate the help.

Orientation:

 1. What is the housing arrangement at orientation? If we have already requested a roommate and if she is coming to the same orientation can we room with them at orientation?

What should I bring my clothes in at orientation?A small duffel bag? The reason I am asking this is because I am going to orientation on thursday not earlier so I was wondering if you are able to go your room right away to put your stuff away or do you have to keep it with you?

Living with a Roommate:
3. I know that roommates usually decide what they are going to bring for their dorm room ahead of time so that you don’t have two of the same thing. Which items should a split with my roommate?

Is it better to rent a microfridge from BU or to buy your own?

Should I get a tv for my dorm?

Thanks for all the help!!!

if u want a microwave, u have to use the microfridge service bcuz unauthorized microwaves are considered contraband. if u only want a fridge then buy your own. for microfridge, arrange to split the cost.

buy a tv if u watch tv.

I don’t think you can request a roommate for orientation. You can bring your stuff in whatever you want…if you get there early enough Thursday, you can store it in your room. Otherwise they’ll have luggage storage for you and you can just keep it there til you have a minute to grab it and put it away. But you’ll probably just need a duffel bag since it’s only for a night. But bring a fan if you can!

If they have luggage storage, then why is it stated on the website that BU has no storage options? It’s great if there is, because I was quite concerned about November 25-29 and March 8-16, the days when you need to leave residences. So far I haven’t seen this at any other college, the move-outs at these times of the year (while the semesters are going on).

No no. There’s only luggage storage for Orientation. The Orientation staff will take your luggage and store it for a few hours while you go off doing Orientation-y things. You don’t have to move out of your residence hall during those breaks; you can leave everything in your room. You just can’t stay there during that time. BU does have an option where you can stay in a hotel at a discounted price during those breaks if you can’t afford to go home or it isn’t an option or something. But you just have to vacate the residences because there won’t be any open dining halls.

AliAngel - is that really true!? I want to bring my own microwave - will it get confiscated?

only if an RA sees it or finds out about it from someone else (and that someone else is a total rat and a jerk lol).

Yeah, I have not known a single person in on-campus housing who brought their own microwave. I did know someone who brought a rice cooker, and that did indeed get confiscated. If you plan on using a microwave, just rent the microfridge, it’s really the best/only option.

Um, so where can you keep your suitcase so you can go home???

at orientation or during the year? you’re not allowed to go home during Orientation except for Wed night, and then you could just take your luggage with you.

if it’s during the year you can leave your stuff in your room the whole time. You personally just can’t occupy a room during breaks. It’s still your room, though. No one’s going to come in there while you’re gone unless you forget to lock it or something.

When you are a student at BU…you keep your suitcase under your bed. Use if for storage of things you don’t use often. Empty it out for trips home. Our kid had a duffle bag that collapsed into a very small thing when not in use.

The typical things kids use in colleges are known as “rack raisers.” They’re sold everywhere and can be low or high. They’re plastic or metal bases on which you put the bed’s legs. You can then store a lot of stuff under.
