i really want to become an accountant nut uci does not have an accounting major so i decided to take business econ and minor in accounting but i heard it is extremely competitive (needs around a 3.8 to get in). How difficult is it to get that gpa with my major? What is the average GPA for my major? What percent of students who apply for accounting actually get in? Would it increase my chances to have extra curriculars? What are my other options for becoming an accountant if i do not get into the minor?

I have to take the writing placement exam and im not so sure i will be able to pass it. What percent of students who take it pass? do you think i would be able to pass it considering i got B's in freshman and sophopmore english honors (C in the last semester) and really high A's in regular english? If i dont pass but pass a college level english class at a community college what writing class could i take? writing 39A,B,or C? Can i even take an english class at a community college (i read somewhere all english classes must be taken at UCI)?

3.How does showering work at UCI? specifically middle earth. I have seen some pictures and it seems to be just a curtain. i also do not see any thing to hang towels or place your clothing.

Its good that you have already decided to get into accounting. Yes, getting into the minor is competitive. You’ll need a 3.7+ to get in, most likely. That being said, getting that GPA depends on the person. I got in last quarter with a 3.78. The average GPA for business econ is irrelevant; but if I were to guess, it would be 3.0-3.4ish.

Its always great to have some extra-curricular activity on the side. Maybe a part-time job on campus, or if I were you, I would get involved with the accounting association starting from freshman year. Get to know everyone in the club, and stay active. This will do wonders for you when it times to applying for internships.

I’m not too sure of the options, but it would most definitely involve taking classes at a local city college or getting a master’s in accounting (macc).

Not sure, call the Humanities dept.

I lived in ME last year. There were 2 showers in our bathroom, it was a co-ed suite. Yes it is a shower curtain; do not worry about where to hang towels or clothing. You can either hang them on top of the curtain, or there is like a little spot on the top side of the shower where you can put clothes.

Sorry, don’t know anything about that but I do hear that its competitive.

You can’t take your writing classes outside of UCI. If you don’t pass your placement test, nothing BAD happens. You just have one extra writing class to take (which won’t count towards the writing GE category). This will be WR39A I believe. Its really, no big deal. Personally, even though I started out in 39B, I think it would have been nice if I got to take 39A first to introduce me to the difficulty of college writing. If you do pass the test, you get into WR39B. However, it’s extremely difficult to get a WR39C course in winter quarter. I tried and they all filled up way before my registration. Therefore, if you do fail the placement and get into 39A, you will probably not be “behind” compared to your peers at all. Does that make sense? Some people wait until their 2nd year even to do their writing.

I’m living in ME right now. The building I’m in is one of the big ones (3 stories). There are 3 showers in each bathroom: 2 back to back and one located in some corner. The showers have curtains. There is a hook to hang your towels on. If you don’t want to hang your towels/clothes outside the shower, you can use this little “ledge” of sorts located between the 2 back to back showers or between the far off shower and a toilet stall. This might sound really confusing to you lol. Just beware that the bathrooms are different depending on what building you get.

thanks guys you have been a big help but i have thought of more questions

when would be the earliest i could apply for the minor and if i dont get accepted the first time could i reapply multiple times?

what classes would you recommend taking my first quarter? i got a 5 on my calc bc exam so i am done with math 2a and b and i want to apply for accounting asap so i would like to get the two management courses out of the way as well

i took multivarable calculus at a community college already and recieved a B does that mean i start out at UCI with a 3.0 or do i start out with a clean slate like other freshmen

Instead of doing it by quarter, just have a list of classes you want to get rid of your freshman year.

Fall –> Econ 20a, MGMT 30A (or Econ 25, counts as same class), Writing 39A or B, Soc Sci 3A
Winter –> Econ 20b, MGMT 30B, Writing 39B or C, GPA BOOSTER.
Spring –> Econ 15a, Math 4, GPA BOOSTER, GPA BOOSTER.

*GPA BOOSTERS = Usually GE’s like Anthro 2A or Classics 45A or something easy. They don’t even have to be GE, just make sure they count for credit.
These are necessary for when you’re applying to the minor.

*Your community college class has no impact on your UCI GPA.

*The schedule I provided is just a loose guide. You don’t have to take 4 classes every quarter. Many freshmen take 12 units (3 classes) their first quarter.

1) You’re failing to make a distinction between competition to get into the major vs. competitive nature of classes/ student body. Most UCI students posting here are talking about the former.

2) Those are literally the five most competitive majors (to get into) on a campus with 80 undergrad programs.

3) What were you expecting? UCI is one of the top schools in the country by most objective measures.

Anyways, you can’t get into the accounting minor until you have 90 units. So, load up on those units and take the pre-reqs asap. You get accepted on a quarterly basis, but accounting classes are only offered once a year, other than mgmt 30a and 30b. So get into the minor before Fall quarter, so that you can start the intermediate accounting series, otherwise you won’t really be able to take accounting classes (maybe 1 or 2) until your 3rd year… but that isn’t so bad, still - you’ll be on track still.

However, over the summer the major restrictions are dropped, so consider taking summer school if you don’t think you can meet the GPA requirements or get into the minor in time.

I’d suggest waiting to take the intermediate accounting series your 3rd year, unless your really intelligent and good at time management, but that’s up to you.
