I have had pantry moths get into flour bags even if stored inside a ziplock. I try to keep all my pantry staples in glass, then even if I buy something that has moth eggs in it (has happened before) when they hatch they are contained to the jar and can’t get into my other pantry items and I only have to toss one thing instead of everything.
For more than 30 years I’ve kept flour in two Tupperware tubs (white and whole wheat). Below is a photo, though inspired by other fun threads I contemplated starting a new thread about kitchen organization. Flour tubs in lower left. , each with a 1c measuring cup. Sugar is in the red-top jar, with more in a plastic bag on a top shelf elsewhere.
I would think your pan is safe to cook in. I’ve used pots that have been in our family back to our grandparent days. I’ve never heard that pots/pans need upgrading as long as they aren’t scratched Teflon. I prefer the old ones TBH, though also prefer stainless steel to aluminum. (Old) Revere Ware is great.
Most of my pots are nearly 40 years old. We’ve searched and can’t find anything we like nearly as well. I agree that if they’re not scratched nonstick surfaces, they should be just fine.
I used to store flour in the freezer but no longer have room to do that. These days I put a couple of bay leaves in the original sack, then place the sack in a zip lock bag (belt and suspenders approach.)
There are a bunch of Anchor Hocking glass storage containers with tight sealing lids in our storage unit. I look forward to getting them back whenever we move into our new house. There’s an online restaurant supply store that sells them by the case.
Any good strategies (aside from calling and threatening to cancel and getting transferred to the retention department) to lower a cable/internet bill (and no I am not switching to hulu or other non cable service).
Does your cable provider offer any bundle discounts? At our old house, it was cheaper for us to switch to a bundle that included telephone service with our cable than to just do cable alone. We never used it; by then we didn’t even have any phones other than our cell phones. Good luck!
I’m not sure there is a better way than to call. The last two renewals (Cox Cable), I called and pretended there were budget issues and might have to cancel. Both times, after they “checked current deals,” I ended up with a lower rate and more services. I think the cable companies are threatened by so many customers cutting the cord, so to speak. We keep cable because we would need too many different subscriptions - easier this way.
Thanks @Silpat and @Marilyn. I call every time the contract is up and speak to the retention department and make nice with them. I’ve signed up for all sorts of different bundles/whatever had the internet speed we wanted and was the best deal. Signed up for the “triple play” one time with no intention of using the phone line. We have ooma VOIP. Until last year I was able to dodge agreeing to a contract. Now the cheapest deal requires a contract. We have no plans to move, but who knows… Well… I guess I’ll give it another week or so til I get close to th contract ending and call…
Random question….I couldn’t resist the 8 lb bag of Cara Cara Oranges for $9 at Costco today. Normally I only buy as much citrus as I can eat in a few days - and I leave it in a counter fruit bowl. I will not eat these all in a matter of a few days! Is it correct that if I store some of them in the refrigerator they should last longer?? These are like GOLD they are so delicious!
Sure. Citrus is fine in the fridge. They will last a long time there. I think I have some cara caras from Christmas still in the fridge. I like to leave mandarins on the counter cause it seems like my peeps eat them more when they are right in front of their faces but citrus does great in the fridge.
The cara cara bag gets emptied pretty fast at home. H eats one (if not more!) every day. The bag of mandarins though sat around unfortunately - had to throw several of them away this morning.
H has a weird routine with his cara cara oranges. He throws one in the freezer - takes it out after his run. By the time he’s showered and down to eat, it’s thawed enough for him to eat it. He loves frozen fruit!
That’s one thing I CANNOT do - frozen fruit! I actually prefer my citrus room temperature. I have 5 sitting out and the rest in the refrigerator. I WISH my H would eat them, but his narrow eating citrus repertoire only includes clementines and only if I peel them for him!! Which I will do if I’m eating some too otherwise I can’t support that lazy habit!
I normally buy ahead my Valencia oranges from the farmers market and routinely keep them refrigerated for two or three weeks. (I only drink a little fresh squeezed juice daily.) I once asked the seller how long I could keep them in the fridge and he agreed up to a month.
I bought a 3 lb bag of cara caras for $3 the other day. I should go eat one!
As for my attempt to get a deal from comcast, frustrating, but ultimately the bill, with the credits they were able to apply, will average out to $15/mo less than previously with all the same service except with a faster internet speed (the previous one was fine, but she was able to give us a faster speed for the same price, but wouldn’t cut the price if I stuck with the old speed!)
