Answer: Yes. And No.
It’s always nice when someone answers their own questions.
After I lost the directions about the proportion of rice to water (what the cooker specified, not the rice box,) mine never worked right. It would crust on the bottom. Didn’t matter if i oiled the pot or not, added more water or less.
So do you have your instructions?
@lookingforward Have you looked online for directions for your specific brand of rice cooker?
Okay, we need more details on how the rice pilaf turned out.
Ahh. But I’d also lost the measuring cup. So now I see that cup is 3/4. And this:
…Many varieties of rice can be used,
including basmati, wild rice, black rice, Arborio, risotto, saffron rice, short and long grain. Do not use instant rice with this rice cooker.
Whole grains such as barley can also be prepared with the rice cooker.
Yes, all the rice cookers I’ve ever had are all 3/4’s of a cup. My relative has used the rice cooker cup as a measuring cup for baking and cooking for many years and didn’t even realize that it’s only 3/4 of a cup instead of a full 8 ounces. Her cooking and baking is fine, so I guess it’s not as important as one might think.
I have recently developed a real hatred of the scent that both Lysol and PineSol leave behind. I have a cleaning lady every two weeks and after she leaves the smell of the stuff lingers for days. It doesn’t bother DH at all – he doesn’t even know what I’m talking about. Has anyone used something “green” that truly doesn’t leave any odor??
I hate scents in general, from scented candles to perfume, but this is a new hate for me. It never bothered me before, but boy, is it bothering me now. I must have been a bloodhound in my past life.
^Ugh, that’s tough. We had a friend over recently who announced shortly after he arrived, “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to leave. I can tell someone has been smoking here recently, and I can’t stand the smell.” ??? I don’t think anyone has ever smoked in our house. We finally figured out he must have been detecting the smell of wood smoke, because we have a wood stove. But we had a problem with the stove this winter, and hadn’t burned wood since January! I didn’t know people could be that sensitive. I am very sensitive to the smell of polyurethane - it gives me a horrible headache. DH finished a lot of our wood moldings in our newly-constructed house after we moved in, and it was a bad experience!
I can identify, @MaineLonghorn. I too can tell when someone has smoked in a house, or a car, or if they sat next to someone else who is a smoker. It’s as if there’s a physical dust that settles on the person that I can smell.
It’s also not even the case of, “I don’t care for that smell.” It’s more the case of, “I can’t stand to be in the same room as that smell; it’s making me feel sick.”
^Yeah, this guy was actually on that level. That must be tough! A good number of Maine residents use wood stoves, so it must limit his social opportunities.
for the rice pilaf I just followed the box instructions, I think it was 1 3/4 cup of water with a tsp of butter in with the contents of the box and seasoning pack. I just hit the switch and let it do its thing (it’s a panasonic cheap-o cooker).
There were a couple of crusty spots on the bottom but nothing major. I’ll definitely do it that way again…
@VeryHappy Are there any scents you find tolerable? Many bother me but some of the citrus ones I don’t mind.
I don’t mind the citrus-y ones as much, but sometimes they are so artificial or overwhelming that they’re gross. I enjoy sniffing a fresh flower as much as anyone, but with air fresheners, Glade plug-ins, diffusers, etc, the smell is unrelenting and disgusting.
Have you tried the Mrs. Meyer’s line? Lots of scents to choose from. Maybe you can go sniff a few in the store. ![]()
I like the lemon verbena. http://www.wsp.wa.gov/community/pullover.htm
Also, consider the Williams Sonoma line. I’m partial to anything grapefruit scented.

I am sitting her nodding my head–I dislike so many scents. Love to have fresh flowers but must take the lilies out of the house immediately. I can often tell what someone has had for breakfast–even waffles and syrup.
Hotels have been using pine sol or some such product and I believe they are not diluting it enough. I have moved rooms the last few times to try to find one that is not so heavily scented. I order up a fan and that helps. I also cannot stand the spell of fabreeze which is often used in hotels that allow dogs. I enjoy the animals but not the smells so I have started asking for hypoallergenic rooms. Then I ask for a father pillow
We use nothing in our house except white vinegar and water, Lysol toilet and shower scrub products.
That is pretty much it. A granite cleaner that has no scent.
One way to deal with this is to provide the products to you cleaner that you want used. I am also now
providing all of the cleaning clothes that I can then wash and bleach. And am looking for a good floor
mop type thing to replace what she brings now. I want her to use things just for my house.
It is not just " I do not like it" it is “my stomach is clutching and my head throbbing”.
I have some allergies and am ready to get retested but mostly I think it all started when y mother wore Georgio perfume in the early 80’s so heavily that I would gag. She left the scent on my seatbelt and I simply could not get rid of it. That and growing up with blue air from my parents smoking.
Clean does not have a scent.
^^^ Glad I’m not the only one.
@doschicos, I will check that stuff out. Thanks.
I use Mrs Meyers Lemon Verbena scented cleanser. It’s about the only fragrance I can stand.
Why oh why did manufacturers start scenting trash bags? My daughter moved home with a box that we finally used up. The nastiest idea ever - every time we opened the drawer the trash/recycling bins are in we’d be hit with this awful fragrance. It took searching the shelves at target to find unscented bags.
Lysol used to bug me, but the odd was I couldn’t bear the smell of shrimp when cooked in the house. And I could smell scotch across the room. Weird.
Oh, don’t get me started on fish smells. DH knows not to cook anything fishy – like, even to heat crab cakes – if I’m going to be around in the next 72 hours!!
