If it breaks again, get the thing I did. Stauber is the brand - better than the original shell. But, at least they made the cars better than the keys. At our mileage, I can’t complain about getting our money’s worth.
You all see the fuss being made of Bodega, a new startup? Complaints that the startup mode is out of control.
Aside from interesting comments about that, I mention it here because…
Why do we freaking need electronic keys? We may have lost sight of what’s progress and what’s just the next clever way to get a dollar out of us. Or 150 or 400.
^ Two completely different things. Electronic keys are a real convenience and safety feature. I will never buy a car without electronic keys because they make my life much easier. I can keep the key safely at the bottom of my purse and open my car even if my hands are full of babies, groceries…pick your example. I much prefer walking up to my unlocked door over fumbling for keys in a dark parking lot.
Convenience, but neither a choice nor a freebie. And safety is your view. I don’t fumble for keys in a dark lot. Frankly, if your arms are full of something, especially a child, you might hop in the car and still struggle to close the door, access the key and drive away from a threat. So I might call it perceived safety.
But the point was just how new inventions aren’t always true progress, just for being new inventions. The Bodega startup is just a vending machine.
Why can’t dos decide on a $3 key?
Are we confusing electronic keys (which still need to be inserted into the dash) and remote keys, which can live happily in the bottom of your purse for months on end?
D3 has a Camry hybrid, from 2008 I think. Keyless ignition and a very, very smart key. You don’t have to use it to unlock the door, the door unlocks for you once it senses the key is about a foot away. So polite, so very nice…
You can start the car without unlocking it, from inside your house and behind your window if you want. So very, very, nice on those cold mornings when the windows are iced over.
If your ignition button doesn’t work, you can touch the magnet inside the key’s Toyota logo to the matching logo on the steering wheel. I’ve never had to do this, but I want to. If your battery dies, your key doesn’t work, you can carefully slide a petite manual key out of the key fob and use it to unlock the door. This, we have done. Too many times.
And if your H loses the spare key and you feel terrified at the thought of needing it, you can shell out $300+ for a new one. And then have to add $100+ for the dealer to program the key. And then add $30 for a blank to be put in the manual key slot so there isn’t a nasty hole there (and you could add another $80 if you wanted that key cut).
Still worth it!
I debated for a while on replacing DH’s Tesla fob (key). You can do everything from the phone app as long as there’s a satellite signal and we do have another fob. $130 was worth it for me because this wasn’t the first time he left it in his pocket and hit the beach/shower/jacuzzi.
There is great peace of mind not having ONLY ONE key to a car. I would be very nervous having just one key because if that’s lost, I think it’s VERY BIG $$$$.
Our newest vehicle came with a pared down, waterproof key fob. As the salesperson said, this is the key you take when you go kayaking.
Does Tesla offer something like that, @aMacMo? Seems perfect for your husband given his history.
@doschicos our only options are the supplied fobs or using the app. I saw some blogs on how to waterproof the fob and may do that for DH.
Anyone watching the AGT finals tonight? What happened when the Comedian Preacher Lawson came on? It looked like the station got hacked and had a still photo of a last supper or something similar. When his act was over-- poof the show came back on! Did others have the same experience? What gives??
I purchased a stainless steel bowl. I was able to remove the sticker on it but it still has the sticker glue residue. How do I remove that? I tried boiling water but it won’t come off.
nail polish remover
Isopropanol or Barkeeper’s Friend would be my first options to try.
@BunsenBurner I haven’t heard of those things. Where do I get that?
Let’s see if the nail polish remover works.
Rubbing alcohol is available in nearly all drug stores or you can use hand sanitizer which is mostly alcohol anyway. Barkeepers friend is also in many drug stores or appliance repair stores.
What HIMom said.
. The other thing that works is to heat it with a hair dryer and it will rub off.
A light oil like “goo be gone” or even a simple salad oil sometimes works if the other things don’t. Sometimes I use a bit of packaging tape and try to stick it to the sticky spot and pull it off that way.
@jym626 I tried pouring boiling water over it but that didn’t help. I even put it in the dishwasher and nothing happened.
Will try these proposed solutions.
