Is there rank among students, and how does this work?

I sometimes hear people saying so-and-so was top 3 in his class...

Depends on the school, but most schools do in fact rank their students. It works the same way as high school, highest GPA = highest rank, etc.

I think others have designations like cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude (the top 25%, top15%, and top 10%, or whatever it is at each college). They do have a valedictorian for graduation though--they may rank all the way through the class, but I've never been told my rank.

In a lot of cases they will just rank a certain part of the student body, say the top 5%. Many (most?) schools have latin honors...

Also I believe that Magna is higher then Summa.

Cum laude--->with praise
Cum manga Laude--> with great praise
cum summa laude--> with the greatest of praise

Thank god for AP Latin I guess.

I know that the U of Notre Dame gives ranks cuz I read an article about a blind guy who was valedictorian at Notre Dame and then went on to be a doctor. It's really amazing.
