Interested in Computer Science(primarily) and Economics too.

What are your stats? If UC is instate for you, then I want to know what numbers make OOS Purdue a safety (or University of Rochester for that matter).

Average SAT score, but the rest of my profile's good.

But these are my safeties according to my school's foreign admission counselor. So please rate em ...

20Legend lives in India, and I am thinking, is an International. (i.e. not a US Citizen or Green Card holder).

Be careful with state uni's as safeties. Obviously they will prefer in-states over you. Also, for example, UC accept rates are like 15% for OOS

Will do. This is just a rough list. Will look into everything else in a while...

Till then, I just want to know how these unis fare against each other ..

U Rochester
Trinity C, CT
Connecticut C
U Calif Davis
Lafayette C
U Calif Irvine
Texas A&M U
Rensselaer Polytec I
U Richmond
Purdue U
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Rose-Hulman I Tec
Illinois Inst Tec
Drexel U

Didnt really look at majors, but I assume you could look up the rankings. I would assume the schools towards the bottom are better for those majors.

How reliable are the rankings at College Prowl ?

Also, please add Virginia Tech to the list ..

You seem to want large universities, so I'm not sure what Trinity, Lafayette, Conn, and Richmond are doing on there...what are you looking for?

Probably won't apply to Conn, Trin. Lafayette, my counselor said offers good aid to Intl. students and that I have a good shot, don't know about Richmond.

Is aid important to you?

If available, then yes. But I'm fine with UCI et al too ..

Is UCI better than UCSD for Computer Science ?

20 legend,
The UC's are not a safety for ANY International applicants. Your average chances of acceptances are around 10%, in other words like trying to get into Harvard. The UC system is mandated by Calif law to educate top Calif students, and is funded by Calif taxpayers. TOP scoring OOS students have around a 15% chance, depending on the campus and International have even less. And top stats- SAT, GPA are the most important components of an application to UC's. The application process is not as holistic as it is at private U's.

I agree with menloparkmom.

Interesting. I'll take them off my safety list then.

1.University of Rochester
2.Trinity C
3.Connecticut C
4.Laffayette C
5.U of Richmond
6.UC Davis
7.Rensselear inst tech
8.Virginia Tech (a little biased, sorry)
9.Texas A&M
10.UC Irvine
11.Worchester polytechnic inst
12.Rose Hulman Inst Tech
13.Purdue U
14.Illinois inst tech
15.Drexel U

If your considering UC's it will be real tough for out of state, but considering you an in state at every university, this is my list. I'm a little biased towards VT because i'm goin there but i'd say (aside from u of rochester) the LAC's on your list are a step above the rest of your safeties.

It seems like your list does show some interest in engineering and if so the LAC's I put up there should drop to the low end of the list and the tops of the list should include Texas A&M, Purdue, Virginia Tech, and Rose Hulman. Good luck on your choice but these safeties look real good for an ivy league prospect or somewhat close to that. Peace

"Is UCI better than UCSD for Computer Science ?"

20LEGEND, I imagine that UCSD is ranked higher than UCI for computer science, although for undergrad im not so sure it matters. The strength of the overall school and your personal preference might be more important. UCSD is a higher regarded university, but if you like UCI then i think you should seriously consider it. it is an excellent school.

Hmm. And what about U Washington and U Wis Madison.

Menehune : And another thing, Purdue's rated very highly on US News et al. You sure it's that bad ?

As an EE, I've have recruited and work with several outstanding Purdue graduates. My sense of the Indiana publics (Purdue and Indiana-Bloomington) is that the schools are very easy to get into, but very hard to do well. The classes tend to bifurcate into two groups: those that get it and get a GPA > 3.5 and those that don't and get a GPA < 3.0. I must say that those that get it seem to get an outstanding education. I don't spend a lot of time with the other group.

It almost seems that these schools feel that since they are large enough, they might as well give almost everyone a shot. That's why there is a danger of using a schools acceptance rate to measure quality.
