Ok so technically my school does not release ranks, only certain percentile ranks. However, if I know for sure that I'm first in the class, do you think it would be okay to put "1st" as opposed to like "Top 5 %" on my application?

Don't put rank when it's not published.

I have a friend who's school does percentile ranks, but they state the val/sal as 1 and 2 on the apps. There are many schools that do this. Maybe your school does that too?

If it's not published? What if its published like indirectly. Our school reports the highest GPA in the class (required on the commonapp school form) and also states the highest GPA on its school report. Even though its not like "this kid is first," do you think it is okay since my GPA on my transcript matches that GPA?

And no our school doesn't state val/sal as 1 and 2 on the apps.

If you know you have the highest GPA in your class, say that. Don't say rank 1. However, make sure you're absolutely certain because if what you say conflicts with what your counselor says that wouldn't be good.
