well, futajalon, I think that by looking at the thread (HARVARD!!!), you can see that it does indeed have a lot of (PRINCETON!!!) posts, but it also has some meaningful (MIT!!!) conversation about name recognition and which colleges (STANFORD!!!) normal people think are excellent (CAL TECH!!!). Frankly, it probably shouldn't factor in to (BERKELEY!!!) your decision too much.

still whatever the circumstance I think harvard has the most widespread name recognition

Since my S is a freshman there, I'd like to offer up Rice. Where is that your ask? Houston, TX. I'm told down south (or at least in TX) it's known as the "Harvard of the South." We're from New England and god only knows how he came up with Rice, but it's turned out to be a tremendous fit. Too bad more eastcoast students don't consider it.

Heck, if you want to stop a conversation here on CC, just say you go to a school no one has ever heard of. Immediate silence will insue. :)

Sorry pearice parent, looks like Duke has legal claim to the title of "Harvard of the South"

I bet Yale would like some attention though.

Any place can call themselves the "Harvard of the ....".....HAven't you heard people say that about wherever their kids are? I've heard Williams called it "of Western Mass." and Miami of Ohio called it "of the Midwest"/.

"Richard H. Brodhead became Duke's ninth president on July 1, 2004, after a 32-year career at Yale University, including 11 years as dean of Yale College.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, he graduated from Yale in 1968 and received his Ph.D. there in 1972. "

Hmmm.... "Yale of the South" does have an interesting ring to it! LOL

"I'd like to offer up Rice."

i was reading School of Dreams yesterday (the book about whitney h/s in california), and there was an example where one korean dad wouldnt let his kid go to Rice but instead made his kid go to UC Berkeley because Rice had no name recognition with his colleagues in south korea and he would be ashamed/wouldnt know what to say to them.

Peariceparent- I sent you a PM. I am a Rice parent, too. Of course, Rice is revered here in Texas.

It seems fairly obvious that Duke is not as good as MIT and Stanford as it is claimed in the US News and World Report's rankings. So I think Duke is overrated by the magazine's rankings.

"Any place can call themselves the "Harvard of the ....".....HAven't you heard people say that about wherever their kids are? I've heard Williams called it "of Western Mass." and Miami of Ohio called it "of the Midwest"/."

No no didn't you click the link?

Kevtrice: It also seems fairly obvious that you don't know what you're talking about, as evidenced by your comments. It also seems rather obvious that you can't read, considering that your post has nothing to do with the topic.

...and Georgetown is "Harvard on the banks of the Potomac."

Duke is the Harvard of West Durham

Cape Cod Community College is the Harvard of community colleges on Cape Cod.

Harvard students addressed the problem with a class-action suit of their own, citing defamation of character. David Marinoff, Harvard University's student body president, said "We don't want future employers thinking that we went to school in a podunk state like Atlanta."

State like Atlanta...? Is this really the student body president?

Harvard, the Michigan of the East.

Probably not, Romo, seeing as its a satire piece.

Boy, you guys are cruel. You'll notice in my screen name it's PEAriceParent...as in Phillips Exeter Academy. Does that count for anything in your mind?

"Phillips Exeter Academy" The conversation just stopped.
