Rank Schools By Name Stopping Conversation

But Jeffl, this is so true, no need to take it personally.........many Asian parents, whether first generation here in the U.S., or living in the F.E. and sending their kids here, want name recognition.
It's not that they don't want the best for their kids, it's just that they may only think that certain schools are the best.

that was a TRUE story. and i am korean, by the way. no need to get offended.

there is no denying that many (not all) asian parents do value name recognition though.

yea, i agree with chocoholic and dreamsicle. harvard, yale, princeton, stanford, mit have the name-stopping conversation factor. but out in california, so do berkeley and ucla for asian parents.

i'm was not offended. Just pointing out that things like that are not true with 99% of asian parents. I am asian, a lot of my friends are asian, we all goto pretty good colleges, but none of our parents forced us to study, or goto a certain college.

I'd like to add University of California at San Diego to the list as well, at least in conversations between academics or science researchers; it's biological sciences/engineering/medical programs are excellent. :)

UCSD may be a good school, but I wouldn't really say it has any converstaion stopping power with anyone, even in California. Obviously, it depends to whom you are talking. Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, and Princton all have pretty good conversation stopping power no matter to whom you are talking. Most everyone will be at least somewhat impressed.

That's true, tore; point well taken.

UCSD still doesn't have the conversation-stopping name as does UCLA or Berkeley in California, and certainly not throughout the country. but perhaps in the not so far future, it will have some conversation-stopping factor in california.

Dammit, stop talking in BASIC.

UCLA and Berkeley do not have conversation stopping power. Harvard Yale Stanford and MIT are the ONLY ones that will stop EVERYONE'S conversation from the lowliest hick to the most elitist prick.

berkeley and ucla DO have SOME conversation stopping power among asian parents in california, i would have to say

It's been pointed out by quite a few here that MIT doesn't have that power for EVERYBODY, collegeperson12.

"Harvard Yale Stanford and MIT are the ONLY ones that will stop EVERYONE'S conversation from the lowliest hick to the most elitist prick."

Many "elitist pricks" will keep talking, actually. HYP are the norm in some circles, and they are not impressed.

I have no idea what the following quote means. Am I totally missing something???

Quote: "Phillips Exeter...oh yeah...the typing, secretarial & dental assistant school. I thought those things had gone out of style. They say things like "The tooth shall set you free.""

Maybe its a California thing?

PS- Don't forget that I know someone near and dear who recently graduated from there. I can guarantee you that he has no career aspirations to be a secretary or dental assistant. Although - he did want a new toothbrush for Christmas!

Thanks 1sokkermom for sticking up for Exeter. That comment was aimed at me and I certainly didn't understand it either. My S graduated from Exeter last June and, while he does type on a computer extremely fast, he's Exeter education has prepared him well for the future on so many levels. Go Big Red!

If conversation stops just because someone namedrops their school, I would suggest this is more of a function of who you are hanging out with than the school that got mentioned. My impression of a person is more a function of what they do, than what their address was for four years. When I meet a competent person I will sometimes ask where they went to school, but it never stops the conversation. The last person I asked was an insightful math teacher, who turned out to have graduated from UCLA. He was impressive to me, the school was merely interesting.

Um, I think The Dad was making fun of the ignoramuses who live out here and have never heard of many of the fine east coast schools, colleges or prep schools... Like my earlier post re Amherst & Swarthmore...

LOL ! The stopping effect actually impacts mostly the students of the elite schools or their wannabes. the mention of Caltech would stop MIT students', of Harvard would stop Stanford's, of Princeton would stop Yale's etc

rtkysg makes a good point in the last post. It's interesting how we all stand in awe at the college an individual attended, rather than looking to the individual him or herself and seeing if he or she is an outstanding person alone. It's not the institution that makes a person great, it's how the person utilitizes whatever's offered at the institution. All these schools have such minute differences that it's often worthless to argue.

Let alone, the top 30 colleges in the country are in the top 1% of colleges in our country; differences in that 1% have got to be somewhat insignificant.
