Rank the 8 Ivys in terms of Campus Beauty

Which do you think are the prettiest any why?

Princeton

All others are so far beneath order is irrelevant

Among the ones I’ve been to:

 1. Columbia (my favorite college campus!)
 2. Princeton
 3. Harvard/UPenn (they were both pretty ugly)

Princeton (the most beautiful campus anywhere, in my book)

Cornell (monumental!)

. . . . [meaningful gap]

Harvard (not as flashy, but I love the integration of town and gown, and the river houses are sensational)

. . . . [meaningful gap]

Yale (the buildings are sensational, but there’s way too much faux-gothic and faux-other stuff, and pretentiousness, and shutting out the city)

Columbia (beautiful and integrated, but claustrophobic, and the elevation thing is obnoxious)

. . . . [meaningful gap]

6-8 (I have trouble with ordering here)

Dartmouth (rural, restrained, boring)
Brown (urban, restrained, boring)
Penn (mixture of sensationally ugly and very beautiful, Furness buildings and some of the recent ones are great, Van Pelt, highrises are among the worst buildings anywhere)

Princeton (Gorgeous)

Yale (Exceptional)

All the rest.

1) Yale, the architecture is fantastic, faux as it may be

2) Princeton, architecture almost as good as Yale’s, nice landscaping

3) Cornell, natural beauty unsurpassed in the Ivy league

4) Harvard, for the river houses, otherwise unexceptional

5) Dartmouth, solid New England charm

6) Columbia, too hulking and elevated, all those names carved in the pediments way cheezy

7) Brown, Harvard wannabe architecture

8) Penn, uuuuuuuugly!

Princeton
Yale
Cornell
Dartmouth
Columbia
Harvard
Penn (omg it’s like random buildings thrown together…)

Yale

Princeton

Dartmouth

Cornell

Harvard

Columbia
8 . Brown

Penn

Oops, add Cornell as #3 to my list. That just leaves Brown, Dartmouth, and Yale unranked - never been there.

Is there a big cutoff between cornell and harvard haha?

Cornell. I love the natural Beauty
Very Close 2:Princeton.

Yale-the buildings are amazing but the rest of the neighboring regions could be better

Harvard

Columbia

Brown/Dartmouth: to me, its kind of hard to distinguish between the two but thats just me.

Penn. Nothing special at all.

Just from pictures I have seen and virtual tours:

1) Princeton
2) Cornell
3) Columbia
4) Brown
5) Darmouth
6) Harvard
7) Yale- New Haven is a horrible city.
8) Penn

Princeton

Yale

Cornell

Dartmouth

Harvard

Brown

Columbia

Penn

Yale –> I LOVE the gothic architecture despite the glum of New Haven.

Princeton –> Pretty :)

Cornell –> natural beauty

Harvard

Columbia

Brown

Dartmouth

Penn

just eyeballing the above it seems that we have formed three groups (in no particular order within each group):

Group A
Princeton, Yale. Cornell

Group B
Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth

Group C
Brown, Penn

my thoughts:

Princeton

Cornell

Darmouth

(some space)

Harvard

Yale

Brown

(some space)

Columbia

Penn

JohnAdams, you don’t particularly like urban campuses.

I thought your grouping was pretty accurate. I was going to comment that Dartmouth will float around (and Cornell, too, to some extent) based on how much weight you give to natural surroundings in assessing “beauty”.

I also think that everyone is being way too hard on Penn. Penn’s campus has a much higher beta than a place like Brown. There are parts of it that are gorgeous – as nice as anything at Yale, and with more artistic integrity. And then there are parts of it that look like something Brezhnev would have built. But I would probably rather have a mixture of really good and really bad than a whole lot of really mediocre.

I live near Penn and I could say that Penn’s campus is nothing special. Random people off the streets pass through it, construction going on all the time, dust, smoke, smog, pollution, noise, etc.
Although the center of the campus is what a university should look like, it’s only a small fraction of the entire campus.

I actually like Penn’s campus a lot. Beautiful buildings, extremely lively and Locust Walk is great. I prefer it to Columbia’s campus, which is just too small for my taste.

Princeton, Yale, Cornell = campus win
Harvard, Columbia = so-so
Dartmouth, Brown and Penn = I have no idea

But to top them all: Oxford bayybayyy (totally not biased :P)
