Actually, it's just college matriculation :)

PrepReview lists the top 50 High Schools in the United States. It is generally considered the most authoritative ranking because it it heavily influenced by what college admissions thinks. College admissions factors how students from schools have done at their specific college or university. For schools in the ISL and New England for 2010, Roxbury Latin is 4th in the country, Windsor is 7th (girls) Andover, Exeter and St. Paul’s are tied for 9th. Groton, Milton and Nobles are tied for 16th. BB&N and Deerfield are at 21, Boston University and Commonwealth School are at 27th, Middlesex is 30th, BH is 33. I have left out some Connecticut schools. Hotchkiss is 26th.

Roxbury Latin is often #1 in this yearly survey. That is #1 in the Country. Last year 21% of the graduating class were heading for Harvard and about 75% of each graduating class heads off to the top 30 Colleges/Universities in the USA as per Princeton review. While there are many ways of measuring private schools, how well they do in preparing students for College has got to be at the top of the list.

Anyone who produces a list of the best private schools in the ISL or in New England, and does not have Roxbury Latin at the top of the list, simply does not know what they are talking about.

As far as the first list mentioned in this thread goes, I can’t give any credence to any list that can’t even get the name of my alma mater correct, “Lawrenceville Academy”, :(

It was always a tough battle. The locals (and I was one as a day student) could never seem to get the name right. It often was called “Lawrence Prep” in contrast to the local “Lawrence High School” or sometimes “Lawrenceville Prep”. The closest people ever came to getting the name was right was the simple “Lawrenceville”, which seems like the appropriate way to refer to it in normal conversation.

The ISL stands for the Independent School League which is comprised of the 16 schools listed at the beginning of this post. These schools compete athletically. Lawrence Academy (Groton, MA) is a member of the ISL, not to be confused with The Lawrenceville School of Princeton, NJ.

They moved Lawrenceville to Princeton?
When did that happen?

Sorry, Lawrenceville, NJ (near Princeton)

fif is a detail-oriented fact-checker. Isn’t that nice?

I just compiled a ranking of the ISL schools by SAT. There are two distinct “tiers” or “partitions” or “groups” or whatever you want to call it.

The ISL goes like this:

Tier 1

 1. Roxbury Latin
 2. Groton
 3. Milton
 4. St. Paul’s, Middlesex
 5. Belmont Hill, BB&N
 6. Nobles

Tier 2
9. St. Mark’s
10. Rivers
11. St. George’s
12. St. Sebastian’s
13. Brooks, Thayer
15. Governor’s
16. Lawrence

My rankings:

Roxbury Latin

SPS

Groton

Middlesex

St. George’s

St. Mark’s

Milton

Governor’s

Lawrence

Belmont Hill

Look at recent Forbes article on best private schools, also, look at this site:

[Top 25 : Matriculation Stats](http://matriculationstats.org/top-25)

this is a great summary of college admissions at each school.

These two sources (confirmed with discussions over time with parents, students, consultants, private junior boarding schools as to ranking and desireability) yield the following tiers for ranking:

Roxbury Latin

SPS, Groton, Nobles, Milton

BBN

Belmont Hill

Middlesex

St. Georges, Brooks, St. Marks, Rivers
13.Governors, St. Sebs, Thayer, Lawrence

The Boston Mag article is a joke, nobody follows that article. No one who knows anything would rank ISL schools that way. Plus, anyone who ranks RL other than first doesn’t know what they are talking about.

There is a wide range of excellence through these 16 schools.
The 2 tiers of schools based on SAT scores looks pretty accurate.
My ranking would be (and this coming from a BB&N grad)

1) Roxbury Latin (no surprise there) boys
2) Saint Paul’s School
3) Groton School
4) Middlesex
5) Milton Academy
6) BB&N
7) Nobles
8) Belmont Hill (Boys)
9) Saint mark’s
10) Saint George’s (RI)
11) Rivers School
12) Saint Sebastians (boys)
13) The Governor’s Academy
14) Brooks School
15) Thayer Academy
16) Lawrence

that 5 to 9 range could be interchanged with one above or below.
the bottom six are the “weakest” of the ISL. “Weakest”
in terms of college placement and overall reputation. Lawrence and Thayer tend to be ranked the lowest by everyone in educational circles.
Still the weakest of the ISL is probably better than hundreds of public schools due to the
faculty student ratio. as well as long history of institutions!

BB&N and Milton have very strong ties for Harvard placement.
Groton and Middlesex are well connected to Princeton.
Roxbury Latin is a powerhouse with a strong endowment. Yale, Harvard, Brown.
big ties.
St. George’s does very well with NESCAC placement, IVY mixed bag.

got a great education at BB&N and had many friends attending the other ISL.
can’t go wrong by the top 10 above!!! :)

My son is starting 7th grade at BB&N in September; he was encouraged to see your post! Thanks for the post, mdgran!

It is RIDICULOUS to be ranking schools in order of NIGGLING differences in average SAT scores!

A school’s average SAT score fluctuates from year to year as we are talking about a relatively SMALL sample set (+/- 100 kids per school). In a small sample set, an average SAT score SEVERAL HUNDRED points higher than that of another school may be statistically significant, but not a handful of points higher.

As university AO’s know all too well, kids can be coached to take the SAT. I’d rather the prep schools focus of giving the kids a well-rounded educational experience, than coach them to “game” the SAT.

Unless you live in the Boston area, comparing Massachusetts day schools to the boarding schools isn’t particularly useful.

I. Roxbury Latin
II. Saint Paul’s School, Groton School, Middlesex, Milton Academy
III. Nobles, Belmont Hill
IV. St. Mark’s, BBN, St. Sebs
V. Saint George’s (RI), Brooks School, Rivers School
VI. The Governor’s Academy ,Thayer Academy, Lawrence

^^in that case to #38, ranking day and boarding schools from best to worse would be:
day: RL, Nobles, Bell Hill, St. Sebs
boarding: St. pauls, groton, middlesex, milton, St. Mark’s, BBN, st. georges, brooks, rivers, governors, thayer academy, lawrence
