Rank the units!

I know there have been multiple threads about this, but maybe a fresh perspective would be nice? (I'm submitting my housing app tonight). 1 seems the most centralized in relation to other dorms, 1&2 both have nice courtyards with grass, but 3 is the closest to campus.

Any opinions on the matter? My rankings will probably be something along the lines of:

Unit __ double

Unit __ double

Unit __ double

Clark Kerr double

Anything

Although I wonder -- my main reason for not putting Clark Kerr higher up is distance (and less social life, I've heard?). Isn't unit 2 fairly far as well?

Any opinions would be very helpful. Also, is it likely they'll stick me in a triple with this lineup?

Unit 4 (Bowles, Stern, Foothill) is actually the closest to campus

Unit 2 is pretty much as far from campus as CKC is and CKC has much bigger rooms.

I think the order goes

Unit 4 is best, followed by a tie between 1 and 3, followed by CKC, followed by 2

Depends on where your classes will be…

Unit 1/2/3 is more lively that the others
Clark Kerr is most spacious/best food
Unit 4 is closest to pre-med/engineering

Everything you hear about the res halls is pretty subjective so…

Forget the Unit 4 for engineering/science thing. There are PLENTY of science/engineering majors in the units and everyone there studies too. It’s just more balanced. And closeness to the buildings doesn’t matter at all your freshman year because all your classes will be all over the place.

^Absolute bullcrap, the closeness is a big factor. It takes over 20 minutes to get from Unit 2 to Dwinelle, Wheeler, or VLSB. Your classes may be all over the place, but Unit 2 is far from everywhere. Unit 4 ranges from being very close to moderately close/far from anywhere you want to go on campus.

Also another factor to think about is safety. Southside after dark is a lot more dangerous than Eastside or Northside after dark.

i live close to but a bit further than unit 2 and it takes me 10 minutes to get to wheeler and dwinelle, vlsb in 15. only if you’re slow it’ll be a problem.

unit 3, unit 1, unit 2, the rest

Closeness to campus is obviously a big factor, closeness to specific buildings like engineering/science does not matter if you are a freshman. The buildings you mentioned (Dwinelle, Wheeler, VLSB) are all much closer to units 1/3 than to Unit 4.

The Unit 4 area (piedmont = frat row) is much safer at all that any of the other units. If you walk alone at 2am and are a girl, you will probably run into some creepers no matter where you are.

I did the following:

  1. Unit 3 Double
  2. Unit 1 Double
  3. Unit 2 Double Suite
  4. Unit 2 Double
    5 Anything
I’ve heard from many Berkeley students that Foothill has an anti-social type of attitude and I lived in Unit 1 during ROHP, which was pretty nice.

they aren’t that much closer.

Over the last three years, I’ve got from Bowles/Foothill to VLSB and Dwinelle in 10 minutes on a nearly daily basis. I walk from VLSB to Cafe3 and back a lot too, and the distance isn’t that much shorter. Frat Row is on southside, the east side of southside. When I said Eastside, I meant the region ranging from the the corner of Bancroft and Piedmont to LaLoma.

Crime is much more frequent on southside than elsewhere. Just look at all the Crime reports that UCPD emails out. Most of the stuff they’ve emailed me about is from southside,

I don’t think it takes 20+ minutes to get from unit 2 to wheeler and all those other buildings. I once walked from the FPF building to Moffitt Library and back in about 30 minutes… (give or take a couple minutes) and I’m sure that’s farther than unit 2 => wheeler/Dwinelle.

10-15 minutes seems about right.

I can get from my Unit 3 dorm room to Dwinelle/Wheeler/VLSB in 5 minutes and I’m a slow walker. Pimentel/Stanley takes about 10 minutes.

Conclusion: Units 1, 3, 4 are all one block from campus but different parts of campus (which doesn’t matter if you’re a freshman). Unit 2 is 2 more blocks away so will be about 5 minutes more. Clark Kerr will take you like 15 minutes to even get to campus.

Umm look at a map, Unit 4 is just across the street from campus, not a block away. Also, Clark Kerr isn’t that much farther from campus than Unit 2 is

^It’s up a ****ing hill. Same amount of time. And keeping this going is not convincing anyone to live in Unit 4.

oh man, didn’t mean to spark such debate.

I’ll be double majoring in English and something else in humanities/social sciences so I don’t have any sort of desire to live in Foothill.

It seems like the general consensus is 3, 1, 2, which is what I predicted. Also, I’m a girl, but I’m from NYC so “safety” isn’t a huge concern for me.

unit 1 2 3 are close to asian ghetto. conversation over.

Walking to class is when distance is most important (there is no set time you have to get back home, but there is a set time when you have to get to class), and walking down hill to class is much, much quicker than walking on flatland to class.

Unit 3 ftw. If the units were a family unit 3 would be the cool kid that isn’t afraid to get dirty and in trouble.

Walking to class isn’t the only consideration, walking back, when you’re tired and just want to rest, but you have this huge hill to surmount…It’s really not worth living in foothill in my opinion.

And I was able to walk from unit 2 to barrows in under 10 minutes, so it’s not that bad. Not to mention it’s the best looking unit.

But then again, unit 3 is really close to Sproul, which is where most people end up walking through for some reason…but laundry is such a hassle there.

I really wouldn’t mind living in CKC because it’s so much better looking and the food isn’t awful…I guess you could take the bus?

Unit 1 feels farther than u3 because it’s up a slight hill and u1 doesn’t have sather lane, which leads straight from u3 to campus; you don’t have to walk around to Dana or Telegraph, but you have to go to Bowditch or College for u1 (unless you walk through the BAM garden…).

And I’m rambling. But basically, each unit has its pros and cons, you just have to decide which cons are less annoying.

I thought unit 1 and unit 2 are basically clones of each other.

Unit 1, 2, and 3 high-rises were built as replicae of each other (except Unit 3 was built about 10 years later). They later renovated Unit 1 and 2, so they look at lot newer than Unit 3. But yea, Unit 1 and 2 are clones of each other.

Regarding building ages:

Minisuite buildings and Wada are the youngest, completed in 2000 or so
Foothill is next, completed in 1990
Unit 3 Beverly Cleary Hall was built in the early 1990’s
The rest of Unit 3 follows having been built in the 1960s
Unit 1 and 2 high rises were built in the 1950’s
Stern was built sometime before Unit 1 and after Bowles, dunno the exact year
Bowles Hall was built in 1928
Clark Kerr is technically a lot older than Bowles, but it did not start out as a dorm
