I think Pomona is a really great LAC that not too many Californians know about and is often confused with Cal State Pomona or something else...but it should def. be up there

Stanford
Caltech
Berkeley
Pomona
UCLA
USC
Claremont McKenna
UCSD

i think caltech is better than stanford if you want to study pure science

Berkeley
Stanford
Pomona
UCLA
Caltech
USC

caltech less than UCLA! no way

LOL @ Berkeley and UCLA boosters.

"LOL @ Berkeley and UCLA boosters.

Pomona

Harvey Mudd

Berkeley

UCSD"

Yea, I see you're from Stanford, so I shouldn't take these rankings seriously.

The OP did not limit, or even specify, math/science institutions vs. combo institutions. Therefore, I replied for the broad perspective, not the narrow. It would be a joke to compare some of the Humanities Majors at Berkeley to some of the lamer institutions that some repliers listed.

If one were looking at just math/science, I would list:

(1) Berkeley/Stanford/Cal Tech: Tied for first. These 3 are similarly excellent, with sub-strengths for each that equalize in the end.
(2) UCSD
(3) UCLA
(4) USC

The OP specified U's not Colleges. Therefore I did not include the Claremont-McKenna colleges.

Stanford, Caltech, Pomona, UCB, UCLA, USC...

I'm sorry, but to say that Pomona (and to some extent Caltech) is better than Berkeley is crazy talk. I mean, make a list of the departments that pomona is better at. I don't mean to say that Pomona is a bad school because its not, it a great school, but I don't see how you could make that leap. Cal just has too many different areas that it excels at to even put it next to Pomona, and outside of the tech majors you could say the same about Caltech. That's like saying that Deep Springs is better than Stanfurd because the teacher/student ratio is better. You have to look at the big picture. And another thing, the poster asked to rank UNIVERSITIES, not just undergraduate quality (which wouldn't make a difference anyway). Unless you're making a joke list (like I did earlier) then saying pomona is a better UNIVERSITY than Cal just makes you look ignorant.

can you please stop with that "u" in stanford.
