I already have an idea of how selective these schools are, but want to double check.

Please rank these schools in terms of how hard they are to get into: (in alphabetical order) UC Berkeley, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon (SCS), Harvard, Harvey Mudd, MIT, Olin, RPI, Princeton, Stanford

Of course, there are always obvious exceptions. My friend got into Stanford but not Berkeley or MIT.

Also, it would depend a lot on the kind of person you are. Obviously, people who are good at humanities but not science would be a lot better off with Harvard than Caltech.

I think it's splitting hairs to think any one of Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, or Harvard is harder than another since along with Yale these are the most selective schools in the US.

Harvey Mudd, CMU-SCS, Berkeley (oos) and Olin are all also extremely selective just a little less so than the others, still none should be considered a match (or safety) for anyone.

RPI otoh in spite of being an excellent school is less selective than the others since I believe their acceptance rate is above 50%.

I think Princeton should be lower than alot of you guys rate it cuz their Early acceptance rate is so high...And i think that's also a reason why MIT can be rated about Harvard. MIT's the only one of HYPSM where applying early gives little/no significant boost to your app. My list goes
MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Caltech, CMU (SCS), UC Berkeley, Olin, Harvey Mudd, RPI

Mudd could be a dangerous safety, too selective even tho it sounds like you must have very high stats.

I'd keep RPI just in case, or maybe add a good engineering school like Michigan or Illinois, possibly Case Western which would be safer than Mudd.

My view of the rankings is this:
HPSM
Caltech
Berkeley
CMU (SCS)
Olin
Harvey Mudd
RPI

Interesting what other people thought. I think it might depend on your own stats (for example, a more academically oriented person might think Caltech is easier than MIT whereas someone with a bunch of EC's might go the other way around).

mathwiz, you seem like the kind of person to do your homework on these things, so surely you know that Olin was ranked right behind HYPM by Princeton Review in "Toughest to get into" in their 2006 "Best 361 Colleges."

The 2007 edition comes out Tuesday, and I wouldn't be surprised if Olin passes Harvard to be #4, and that's based on this spring's admission stats. Your admission cycle should be significantly more difficult, as I've heard from admissions that they've been getting more visitors than ever this summer. That puts Olin right in the middle of HYPM as far as difficulty for entrance.

And you can legitimately put HMC on your "safety" list - they're dying for kids with stats like yours. At the same time, it's a great place for an engineering/math/science education.
