My daughter has been accepted to all of the above. She is nterested in science/math/engineering. Any info comparing the above would be great! Thanks!

im just a jr, so i dont know much. but my potential college list is very similar to that. what were your ds stats and stuff so i can compare myself to you and predict where i will get in?

first of all, congrats, great schools.

i dont know much, but:

i would say SLO
cheap cus of public
great campus and city / area
great science and math stuff i believe

stay away from University of San Diego. trust me because I am a current student at University of San Diego and is transferring after this semester.

Coolant is entitled to her opinion, but I wouldnt put much stock in what she says. She may be the most bitter transfer student I have ever encountered on this web site. Check out some of her past comments:

10/03/08: "Diversity" does not exists at USD. I am an Asian (Taiwanese) and felt that I am treated poorly by all the Americans here.

11/18/08: There is a fire going on in CA, I wish it can just burn down my current school COMPLETELY into ashes. I won't even drop a tear!

Adultparent! posted a great response to her on 10/5/08:

Sorry that you aren't happy at USD. I see from your posts that you have transferred three or four times, and you have only been at USD for a month. You say that nobody in Taiwan has ever heard of USD. You say that downtown is inaccessible. You had to walk 20 minutes to the nearest pharmacy. You say classes are boring and you don't like the way they are taught. You say that you have to take Logic and Ethics, "etc.". You say the professor picks on students, and students are rich, white, rude, ignorant, not welcoming. (Except the one in ten, who presumably, are not rich, white, rude, ignorant and not welcoming.)

Whew! I was going to gently respond to these things, but I will just say that if this is your experience, then you really should move on. Good luck with your quest to find the right school for you.

Coolant apparently cannot stop bashing USD whenever she can. You wonder who has the real problem, USD or her. I wouldnt trust her.

The "Percent of students who return for sophomore year: 85% (source: Collegeboard)." In other words, 15% of students is seeking transferring to another university. This tells you who has the real problem.

I have some friends down at USD, and they LOVE it.
A school is what you make of it.
If you have it in your mind that USD sucks, you're going to magnify all the little things that go wrong in your head and it will make USD seem even worse.

There are a lot of people who love USD, so I wouldn't say it's the school's fault.
It's the fault of the individual.

My d had an 1890 on the SAT and a total GPA nonweighted of 3.81. Hope that helps you determine your chances of admittance . . . Best wishes to you!

A lot of kids from my school go to chapman. I wouldn't say they were the all time best, but they have all been decent. San Diego State has a huge party rep. Um I got accepted to usd I don't think I want to go though, even though it is a very beautiful campus. My sister went to point loma and loved it, but since then they have become way more conservative. But, that also may be a positive aspect for you and your daughter. Cal Poly SLO is a very good school, probably one of the most prestigious cal states. I would rank that #1.

I heard that Point Loma has a lot of partying, which takes me by surprise. Is there anyone who can tell me what they’ve heard or experienced? Thanks!

Whew, that’s embarrassing.
I think I’d check my grammar before I sent posts that are bashing the school I attend. It definitely makes you wonder about the credibility of the student.

To the OP, I think you can narrow the list down by looking at criteria such as number of students, average class size. Your list has huge schools, small schools, and tiny schools. She should have a feel for what might work. (UC’s were high on D’s list until we visited one. Too big.)

Also, let your d know that it is ok to use some ‘outside the box’ criteria. Criteria at our house included ‘no fraternities’, and ‘ability to get to snow in a couple of hours’. Other criteria that were useful: ‘is there an international airport nearby? (we live overseas)’ and ’ can you use public transportation easily?'.

StereoMuse7,
Why don’t you want to go to USD even though “it’s a beautiful campus”??
What is the general reputation of usd?? Seems like it is a respected school.

How come more Californians are not interested in this school?? I wonder why the returning freshmen rate is only 85%. Not terrible but not as good as one would think for a respected school with a beautiful campus in San Diego.

I didn’t apply to many schools but I got into
UCI, Chapman, and USD.
How should I rank my short list?

I don’t want to commute but if I go to UCI or Chapman I’m going to have to.
How is USD socially and academically? (major: biology—want to change to biochemistry)
