Rank Villanova in National Universities US NEWS

So it is kind of bogus that Villanova is in that crappy "regional university" category in US NEWS. I mean Villanova is so much better than Fairfield and Loyola, that it should be ranked with the "big boys." If we were ranking Villanova in with the national universities, with the rest of the schools, where would you rank it?

I would say that Villanova would be ranked below Boston College and William & Mary, but better than Lehigh and University of Rochester. So I would put Villanova arround a #34 or #35. Where would you rank it?

Here is the list of rankings:

National University | Rankings | Data | US News

Villanova better than NYU but not better than William and Mary. I would rank it #34 on the national university ranking.

I would say that it is ranked lower than Boston College, but perhaps a bit better than Boston University. People who know about the school know that it is a good school, but I am not sure it is that well known nationally.

Villanova university itself conducted some sort of internal study to see where they would rank in terms of the national universities. The rank they found was somewhere from #30 to #40…I would put Nova at #33 because it is better than NYU and Rochester and on par with william and mary, maybe slightly below…but if they have NYU and WM as a tie then i think nova could tie WM.

I really hope that Nova gets added to the new list. I mean whats does it matter if your ranking is #1 when your peers are Loyola, Fairfield, and Bentley. Anyone think they will move the ranking and what does it need so that it can be in the new ranking. I heard more masters and PHD programs. Boston College is most an undergrad school, so IDK what the criteria is.

Could someone explain why Villanova isn’t ranked on the National University list?

^ this is why…i copied this directly from the poster brave ulysses on a differnt thread.

Villanova is not ranked in USNWR “National Rankings” because it offers a select number of Doctoral degrees. Villanova has been ranked #1 in The regional North category for a number of years.

USNWR defines :

Regional Universities

Regional Universities offer a full range of undergrad programs and some master’s programs but few doctoral programs. These rankings are split into four regions: North, South, Midwest, and West.

Villanova has increased the number of Doctoral programs and degrees over the last few years and may qualify in the “National” category in the very near future.
Villanova’s internal study indicated that they would rank in the top 50 of USNWR if/when they are rated in the National category.

Nova2011, thank you for referencing my earlier post regarding USNWR ranking methodology , here is my in depth explanation:

The SIMPLE point of clarification as to why Villanova is not ranked in the national ranking has nothing to do with “national recognition” or “make the national ranking in their corresponding category”.

It has to do with USNWR category definitions.

"USNWR

National University Rankings Methodology

Schools in the National Universities category, such as University of Chicago and Stanford University, offer a full range of undergraduate majors, master’s, and doctoral degrees."

Villanova is not a"National University" category by USNWR definition (see above).

Villanova has been a traditional undergraduate institution that is expanding it masters and doctorate programs and degrees conferred. It is ranked in the regional rankings because in the past it did not confer a high enough percentage of degrees in Masters or Doctoral programs. That is changing , in 2010 , while Villanova conferred 1917 Bachelor’s degrees & 767 Master’s degrees .

It is not ranked in the Liberal Arts category because it is not strictly a liberal arts school , as defined by USNWR Rankings Methodology “which emphasize undergraduate education and award at least HALF of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study”.

Villanova’s Business , Engineering & Nursing school are slightly more than half (55% +/-) the undergraduate degrees.

It is interesting that Villanova’s school of Liberal Arts is around the size of many schools in the Liberal Arts category and if Villanova School of Liberal Arts were ranked in the Liberal Arts category it would rank between #30 Bucknell and # 41 Franklin & Marshall. This can be verified by comparing the specific rankings data.

As I have stated previously , if/when Villanova is ranked in the National category , it will rank somewhere between 31 (Boston College) & 45 (UT Austin).

The rankings use strict metrics to define a score , thus ranking.

31 BC has accept rate 31% , Freshman retention rate 95% & 6yr graduation rate 91%

45 UT Austin has accept rate 45% , Freshman retention rate 92% & 6yr graduation rate 81%.

Villanova has accept rate 45% , Freshman retention rate 95% & 6yr graduation rate 90%.

Many people feel that Villanova is now roughly equivalent academically to Lehigh, except with less emphasis on technical research.

A lot of students here seem to have an extremely inflated perspective of Nova’s reputation and rank, but I guess that’s just school pride…

We’re stronger than Fordham (#53) but are we stronger than GWU (#50)?

And why is Northeastern, a school with stronger admission stats ranked #62?

The school Nova’s admission stats, retention rate, class size, graduation rate and tuition are most similar to is U.Miami, which is at a healthy #38 tied with Lehigh and Case Western Reserve.

Honestly I’d say we can potentially land anywhere from 33 to 60. My best guess is in the high 30s or low 40s

There is definitely an intangible quality that could be applied to Nova when considering ranking. Measurably it will be hard for it to get better recognition but amongst the alumni & NE business folks. It is highly respected. So if Lehigh is higher ranked but the employer is a basketball fan-- no contest! Nova applicant trumps USNWR rankings!

Basically- it’s splitting hairs- go with the right fit & what you can affortd.

Novafrosh: Northeastern does not have stronger admission stats. They are also notorious for playing with their numbers (like admitting lower scoring applicants to begin is January so they don’t have to report their stats).

Villanova did do an internal study and I thought it found that it would be around 40th. They applied the methodology as well as they could. They concluded the range could be from 30-50 if I recall. I suspect it would be more in the range of high 40s to low 50s.

One of the problems they have is a low alumni giving rate. They are trying to upgrade and add PhD programs but they need to raise money to fund it. A family friend attended Villanova and graduated in the spring. He is already getting calls asking for donations.

So Nova will be ranked as a National University by US News starting next year! Any thoughts on where Nova would be ranked considering the business school just got ranked #1 by Bloomberg Businessweek and the acceptance rate is about to plummet 10 percentage points because of the NCAA Tournament win?
