Rank

I know class rank can be important in freshman admissions, but I just found out that my university ranks students, so I'm wondering if that should be included in my application.

My rank in the Freshman class and the school that my major is in are both in the top 40%, which isn't that impressive, but apparently I'm ranked #1 in my major, but there are only 3 people (including me) with that major...

Is any of this important?

Personally, I wouldn’t mention either statistic unless the application asks for it. Top 40% is not significant enough that it would affect their opinion much more then seeing your GPA would. And saying you’re ranked #1 out of 3 people just sounds silly. You could say you are ranked #1 in your major and not mention how many people participate in the major, but to me that is somewhat deceitful.

There might be an adjustment in my grades that would raise my GPA, but there wouldn’t be a new rank calculation, and I figured anything larger than top 25% wouldn’t be worth mentioning (I suspect that a lot of people got my GPA, which is why the rank isn’t so special).

I assumed that rank within a major would be more significant anyway, but it doesn’t feel right to say I’m ranked #1, when it just means that I beat two other people, but I’m not sure that I couldn’t submit it.

Any other opinions
