Ranking colleges

I am planning to be a Linguistics major, most likely with the specialization in cognition and language. In terms of GE requirements, which college would be best for me?

Look, I don’t mean to be rude, or attack you specifically, but within the past week (because the due date for UC Applications is coming up…) there have been NUMEROUS threads created on “Which college?” “Rank the colleges!” “Pre-med… which college?”

Instead of creating new threads for your own specific major, why don’t you do some reading up on this forum?

Here’s a list to threads created within the past two weeks on UCSD’s six specific colleges:

FYI, these were all on the first page or top half of the second.

Anyways, as I will reiterate for all the people who answer questions on this thread, your major has absolutely no bearing on the college you’re in. Choose the college you think best suits your interests–some colleges have more GE’s than others (ERC, Revelle, Sixth), while others have just an average amount of GE’s (Muir). Some colleges are more geared towards science/math majors (Revelle), engineers (Warren), humanities/social science (Muir), etc, etc.

I’m from out-of-state, and I did some easy google searching of UCSD’s sixth college. Wikipedia, and UCSD’s website have great listings of each college, what kind of students they attract and breed, and their GE’s.

I’m not too familiar with the Linguistics major, but what are your interests? Are you solely interested in language/humanities/social science realm? Are you willing to broaden your horizons–into a year long study of Calculus, natural sciences, fields completely irrelevant and non-related to your major of study? Are you looking for a rigorous writing/humanities sequence? (ERC, Revelle) Are you more interested in a more “modern” writing sequence exploring culture, arts and technology? (Sixth) More formal, structured writing sequence? (Warren)

First result from Google search: “The six colleges at UCSD”
[The Undergraduate College System](UC San Diego - Compass)

UCSD gives you links to each of the six colleges, descriptions of them, and their websites.
Take a look for yourself, because you know yourself and your interests best. There are Linguistics majors in EVERY college at UCSD, but each and every one has different interests, and so does each college at UCSD.

Make sure you choose a college you’re interested in, and are prepared to complete their GE’s because inter-college transfer requests are rarely granted upon acceptance/matriculation (ie: Transfer from Revelle to Muir).

Anyways, if your sole interests are CogSci/Linguistics, I’d probably choose Marshall. But take a look at the other colleges, too.

Double post :O

i wonder if there’s a way we could just bookmark all that :)
