I know not to put too much stock in what my daughter (current h.s. junior) wants to major in in college. But I was wondering, how do people find rankings of college departments? I occasionally read that some college's economics department is ranked No. 3 in the country. Where is that info posted? I searched through the online (paid) version of U.S. News and World Reports but haven't found rankings except for engineering. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it!

One source you could look at is Rugg's Guide http://www.ruggsrecommendations.com/rureonco20ed.html

Our counselor has it for the students. I also found it at my public library in the states. It is a good starter guide.

Rugg's is the best, especially since it includes LACs. The Gourman Report also ranks undergrad programs, but it tends to favor large state universities. Many people cite the NRC rankings as a source, but they rank graduate programs.

Thank you, overseas, for the tip about Rugg's Recommendations. I immediately called my D's school and borrowed it. It confirmed the reasearch I did on the academic programs of several schools that she is trying to decide upon . . . this week! My D feels really happy about her choices, and I owe that to Rugg's.

Georgemma, It started my son on his quest. What a week this is, isn't it! Have fun.
