ranking of public university systems in the US

what do you think? does not count single school 'systems'

University of California

Virginia (incl. UVa, Virginia Tech, George Mason, etc...)

University of Texas

University of Illinois

University of North Carolina

Pennsylvania CSHE (incl. Penn State, Pitt, etc...)

SUNY

What do you mean by Single School Systems?

i think the OP means like rather than saying “UC Berkeley > UNC,” just rank the state systems as a whole

I think the Wisconsin system would fit in there somewhere.

Georgia should be included - it has both UGA and Tech.

Where the heck is Ohio, Michigan, or Minnesota?

University of Washington? Having the top medical school in the country has to count for something.

ya…i missed georgia :(

i was gonna put washington in but…

California

Virginia

North Carolina, Michigan (tie)

Texas

California does a great job given the numbers of kids they have to educate, but Virginia prob is a better deal for the very top kids. UVirginia is has a great mix of academics, sports, Greek scene. William & Mary is truly incomparable. There is no other public school like it in the country. Its a mix of Harvard history, Georgetown prestige, Amherst education, all at public school prices.

swish14, I would rather attend Berkeley, UCLA or Michigan than William&Mary. Though it cannot eb denied that W&M offers top-notched education.

I’d say the UC has got to be the best university system out there. It has been the model of many university system in many countries around the world, including Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and France.

Both UCLA and Berkeley offer the former to differing degrees. Incomparable doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Indeed, personal taste comes into it too. But in this case the uniqueness adds diversity to the Virginia system that other states don’t have.
And you can’t forget Virginia Tech, as, well, the tech school.

I think that this topic has been beaten to death before. An example:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/736197-assessing-individual-states-university-systems.html

I also think you fail to take into account university systems as a whole. You can’t only count top universities when evaluating systems.

Yep. It’s probably the one state where kids are satisfied with going to community college and have a reasonable shot at a good school afterwards.
