Hi, I’m interested in applying to these schools and would like to work for a major tech company or in Silicon Valley. Please help me out by ranking them for computer science/computer engineering.
Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
Waterloo
U of British Columbia
U of Toronto
U of Alberta
U of Calgary
Washington- Seattle
Illinois- Urbana- Champaign
Duke
Cornell
U Penn
Are you a Canadian or American or something else? If American, do you live in CA, IL or WA?
I’m a Canadian citizen from Calgary, Alberta.
UIUC
Cornell
Waterloo
Berkeley
UW
UCLA
UCSD
Penn
Duke
(I’m unfamiliar with some of the other schools, and this list is rough and tumble anyway)
For a Canadian looking to work in SV,
Waterloo (co-op helps with paying tuition and getting experience which is necessary for getting that permanent job in SV)
U of T (there is no direct admission to the CS major here, but there is direct admission to CE)
UBC
Cornell
Berkeley (no direct admission to CS here either, but heck, it’s close to SV)
UCLA
UCSD
UW
all the rest
D16 applied to CS. She looked at most of the schools on your list and visited many. We visited Berkeley and scratched it off the list. We were treated so poorly and the facilities were such a dump compared to the US private schools and Canadian schools that there was no way it was worth paying $60K USD x4. She ended up only applying to US private schools and Ontario schools (although UBC is an excellent choice). She’s attending Waterloo, but not as a CS major. She was admitted to CS, but chose a different program. She is headed for her first co-op and will make >10K her first term. Many of the CS majors she knows are headed to SV and are making more.
I’d suggest adding Santa Clara University to your list as well as Harvey Mudd College (and possibly other Claremont Colleges).
Before applying, and after acceptances, make sure you are admitted directly to your preferred major. Many universities are requiring freshman to meet a GPA hurdle before admission to CS. U of T, UCB, and UW (for most students) are in that category. I’m not sure about most of the other schools on your list. I do know that Waterloo admits directly to the major.
