Ranking

If your school does not rank, how does this factor play into the admissions process?

My school didn't rask, and I think it said on the form to estimate what percentile I'd be in. So I just honestly estimated where I was*. They never questioned me about it.

*very honestly in fact! I could've justified a 1/175 rank but instead I put down top 5%.

Don't worry, my school doesn't rank either (they just started NOT ranking this year, too!) but my guidance counselor told me she wrote that I was the "top student" in my recommendation. (I was accepted, btw) If you're near the top, I'm sure colleges can tell anyway. So don't worry too much aout it

UKRUS, you mean on college applications you estimated your rank percentile instead of your GC doing it?

is that allowed?

Well, from what I've seen, schools that don't rank (like mine) usually do it in deciles. Most applicants to Harvard, I think, fit into the top decile, and don't need to specifically ask to verify it.

Jason: I was the only EA applicant from an overseas school, so there was no procedure. It was my application, I filled out all the rest of it, so it seemed reasonable that I'd fill in that bit as well. Like I say, I was never asked about it so I can't tell if they even thought about how the ranking was worked out.

Where are you from, UKRUS?

If I'm in the top 10% but have a slightly declining trend on my transcript, is that a disadvantage for Harvard EA?

it's very hard to get into Harvard EA period unless you have a hook

Yeah, somewhat...

But it's good to apply EA anyway because when it comes to RD they take into account the fact that you were a) organised enough to apply EA and b) keen enough to do so.

I think in my school you can request to be ranked in percentiles or have the specific rank, anyone else's school like this?

my school is private and does anything it can to get kids in top colleges so they look better and get more enrollment.
