Ranking

I was sniffing around the college profiles on CB today, and noticed that most of my colleges consider class rank "very important." However, my high school doesn't rank students. Will this affect my application to colleges, including top engineering schools?

My HS is pretty competitive, and if it were ranked I'd likely be in the top 2%, if that helps you at all. Thank you!

Furthermore, what if class rank does not really determine your place among your peers at your school? For instance, by end of the first semester of next year (my senior year) I may have a slightly less GPA than another student, but that is only because I am taking a more advanced calculus class at a local college rather than taking AP Calc BC; therefore, I am not getting an extra grade point like he is. Darn my initiative? That doesn’t make sense. Which is why I just made a thread about the “additional information” section of applications: would that section be a proper place to justify where you stand, so that colleges better understand the numbers they see? I guess perhaps I could tell my counselor to provide that kind of info in her recommendation…

It won’t affect your admission chances. The college will still look at your GPA in the context of your school though, so if you estimate that you’re in the top 2%, then that’s great. My school doesn’t rank either, btw.

EDIT - supercool, if you’re a couple of spots off, then in the end it doesn’t matter. I definitely would not recommend justifying your rank in the additional information though, it seems too … desperate? not sure if that’s the right word. Your counselor providing that kind of info wouldn’t be a bad idea though.
