There are many buses running from South Station in Boston to NYC. Mega Bus and Bolt Bus go to Penn Station. The Fung Wah bus goes to Chinatown. We have taken the Mega Bus several times. The Fung Wah bus has had several issues and has been involved in fires on the highway. They have made the news several times in the past few years. The Greyhound bus also travels to NYC, but I don’t know were it goes into. The earlier you book your trip the cheaper it is.

My son has. Decent reliability but I always feared the safety ratings. Also check out Megabus!

I would recommend Megabus if you want reasonably priced travel. The safety issues that have surrounded the ‘Chinatown’ buses would eliminate them from consideration for anyone I know. It’s not worth risking safe transportation in order to save a few bucks.

Thanks for the Megabus recommendations!

Megabus brings my D back and forth to NYU very safely and usually on time and more than once, the one way fare has been $1! My only recommendation for Megabus is to be sure to be at the bus stop at least 30 minutes in advance. We did not, to be honest, take distance between home and college into consideration when my D was making her decision, but I find myself very happy we are only a three-and-a-half hour bus or car ride away, especially now that it’s the end of the year and we need to drive up and haul her stuff home!

I am wondering if the figures that fish posted for all schools at the top of this thread are for tuition/room/board and miscellaneous expenses. I think the Tisch figure is right (or close to it) but do the rest of the schools include all those things in the estimate?

Thanks for the tip about promptness for catching Megabus, NMR.

Penn Station sounds good because you can get a train to Trenton there, and then a commuter rail line to within a few blocks of our house. In the old days when there were fewer choices, Greyhound went from Boston to Port Authority and you could switch to a Phila bus there.

I guess if people don’t believe Fish’s figures and want to double check on a particular school of interest, they can. For those who are wondering, here is what is on Boston University’s website:

Resident

Tuition $37,910
Fees $530
Books and supplies (est) $940
Room and board (most plans) $11,848
Incidentals (est) $1,772

Total $53,000

I had no idea what a great deal UNCSA was!
For those of you in the future considering CCM, if your kid is a good student, make sure you get the application in by the Cincinnatus deadline. They gave my D $5000 a year because she had good grades and a decent SAT score. And all you have to do is put in your application. We are out of state, and that brings that number down quite a bit…They are very generous to good students.

Wow. I didn’t evision this leading to a debate on parenting philosophies! LOL

Just to clarify without being too argumentative … When I say middle class, I don’t mean upper middle class professional people who can afford to send their kids to expensive summer camps or private boarding schools that cost as much as some colleges. I’m talking more about their assistants whose ex-husbands are shift supervisors at the local factories, etc. who probably didn’t even finish paying off their own college loans until their mid-thirties. I’ve seen too many of their kids get screwed by FAFSA. Happens every year to kids from my old h/s who get in some great programs and then can’t afford to attend … And I thought I was pretty clear that I wasn’t talking to exceptional students eligible for the big merit and talent money …

Also, I don’t recall seeing any “extra” expenses beyond tuition and room & board that would move any school up or down more than a spot or two in the areas where they’re close … I think the prices quoted are pretty well in the ballpark although probably not 100% accurate and definitely not to the standard of someone who gets paid to do the research. :)

I have added the actual 2009 costs for UArts. However, note that UArts is extremely generous with grants, scholarships and need based aid and virtually no student pays full ticket.

Lol, FBfreshman, neither did I :)

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the list. I am printing it out for the other decision-makers on our family committee (husband, student). While it may not figure into the decision of where he auditions, the bottom line (including merit awards, if any), will certainly figure into the final decision should he be fortunate enough to be accepted to schools on that list.

We know a West coast boy who got into several v. good BFA acting programs. The decision came down to NYU or SUNY, and he and his family chose SUNY because of the cost difference. They are not middle class and get no need-based money and have college looming for two other kids… the student agreed it was the sensible thing to do, even though he really wanted NYU.

Your numbers are off for Chapman University. They will move down the list as the total is actually $50,110 which includes tuition, room and board, and some misc. fees.

One detail worth checking out is whether tuition is guaranteed for all four years. D’s tuition at her LAC has gone up each year, whereas our S’s tuition at DePaul is guaranteed to stay level through four years of undergraduate work. I don’t know how common guaranteed tuition is - but it makes planning a bit easier.
