We should add Sarah Lawrence, which outdoes even NYU as to price.

How is it UCF is more money than FSU? When FSU is a better school overall and I know they have a good BFA program.

How did you guys arrive at SLC’s $$$? The New York Times did a story a month or so ago proclaiming SLC the single most costly school in the US.

NMR – the article you cite appeared in the NYT on October 5th, 2008. The figure listed in the article was $53,166 for tuition, room and board (using ’08-’09 expenses). My figures are directly from Sarah Lawrence’s web page for 2009-2010 expenses as follows:

Tuition $41,040
Room $9,020
Meals $4,350
General College Fee $728
Student Activities Fee $200

Total cost $55,338

I forgot to note that you get your BA in three years…so total outlay even with travel (2 trips a year) exchange fluctuations, food, travel and local transportation still saved $20,000 over what we would have paid if he had attended Roosevelt University (4 years for BFA-Acting) where he was originally headed.

I’d be interested to know what impact going to school abroad for a BFA - Acting has on career opportunities…

This was a question we too had when discussing this decision. We spoke to many local and regional contacts that encouraged him to go abroad. But the most sobering comments came from a very high executive at one of the largest and most prestigious talent agencies. Our oldest daughter worked for the executive VP and our son’s conversation went like this:

“Anyone can drive to Hollywood looking for fame and fortune (they are a dime a dozen), but we want to represent classically trained actors, that we know we can send out to an audition and be prepared to do any role.” If I were you, I would get classically trained which you will in the UK." You will have to move to NYC or LA once you graduate to make your contacts, anyway." “Be the best actor you can become over th next few years.”

He just finished his first year at RSAMD. Very successful.

Glad to hear that RSAMD was the right choice for your son. Did he consider any other programs in the UK? Is it possible to get any merit aid as a foreign student?

I’ve been told the same thing and have often felt like I was barking into the wind suggesting it around here. :)

How were we so lucky to have a child that is at NYU? But very thankful for a generous grandparent…

I wish my grandparents were rich! :(

No,our son only auditioned for RSAMD at the Chicago unifieds weekend. RSAMD does not give merit awards to US students however our son was able to get the maximum allowed on his Stafford loan. There is a very talented girl who will be going to a drama conservatory in the UK who did receive merit based monies…so I’m sure it is on a school by school basis. There are not alot of posters that have experience with UK drama schools so there is usually very little information. I try and chime in when I think people may find my information interesting. I have spoken via emial and private meesssages to other posters that w2ant to know more. I can tell you that my son has spent the last week in NYC going to Broadway, Off-Brodway and Off Off Broadway shows and his perspective and play analysis are amazing to listen to. His regimine was 8 AM to 5PM Monday -Friday for 40 weeks. He can’t wait to get back to Scotland for his second year. A very positve and rewarding experience!

Elon looks like a steal… What is the surrounding area like? How far is the nearest city?

WellMeaningDad - Elon is VERY small town, mostly the university. Burlington is larger (20 minutes away), and has shopping needs, but is not much of a college town. Durham and Chapel Hill are less
than an hour away.

Elon has found a pricing niche that is a little different from most schools. They do not offer large merit
aid, about $2000-$4500/year for the Presidential Scholarships, but they offer them to the top 25%
of the students. Some need-based aid is also available, but it is not 100% need. Because their base
tuition is relatively low, they tend to attract students from families that would not qualify for
need-based aid elsewhere.

Academically, they are big on outside the classroom learning experiences such as internships,
study abroad, and volunteering. They have been very successful at attracting increasingly qualified students over the past 10 years or so.
