rankings

Up to now the only method I've had to know how good a college / university is by using US NEWS online, however I feel this is not the type of ranking I am really expecting. You see I am interested in the Sciences (computer science, math, biology, chemistry, physics ...) so i want to see how good these departments are within a college. Please let me know how can I know this? I thought of using the Graduate school ranking, however I am not sure if this is the best way to measure an UNDERGRAD department. thanks a lot.

I don't think there are UG departent rankings out there for most departments. I do, however, think there are ways to get a feel for how strong the department is. Look at grad rankings. It wont tell you how well the classes are tought at the ug level, but it gives a feel for where the school is putting its money. You have to remember the departments are departments, there isn't and ug department and a seperate grad department. They are run by the same people. You can probably also find stats about post college employement or grad placement. This will tell you where students are going after getting out of the program. Also, go on the websites and look at who is teaching ug classes in certain departments. Add all these things up and you'll have a better idea about the strength of the department.
