No I did mean penn state. I donno I thought it was a good school...never looked into the school so I guess the Penn label adds false luster lol.

anyhow...Cornell Engineering rocks socks!!!! lol

another extremely annoying thing that I got when I got it was like "ooo Cornell, you'll never survive the cold!" (I am from Florida...but still, it's fine) "It's too cold for you, you'll never make it!" et cetera. Like discouraging comments. Also, I've gotten, "Oh wow I knew a person who went there and they hated it!" Like WHAT is that....so few people hate it, not to say that they don't exist, but what kind of a thing is that to say to someone who is about to go there??? Regardless of the school. I found that absurd at best.

I think people must be really insecure to make comments of the sort…so in essence they have issues and need to be pitied! Ya…it makes no sense to judge based on minimal knowledge and bias (i.e the Harvard lawyer)…it makes no sense to dumb down others achievements for your own sense of comfort…but it happens!

It pains me to say that Americans are highly ignorant and self-absorbed. Actually, it doesn't pain me. Half of eligible voters don't even vote, and many do not even know the name of our vice-president. I remember doing a survey for my government class, asking what is the capital of New York, and I get stupid answers like Manhattan. I really don't care that Cornell is not very well known in the US, that says nothing about the school. It is very well-known internationally (hell, even on Mars demmit), and there's no shame in going there. The Mars thing is something I usually joke with my friends who go to other prestigious places.

"I really don't care that Cornell is not very well known in the US"

Cornell is easily among the most recognized places of elite education in the US ... unless you talk to a few hicks and their wives/sisters.

"unless you talk to a few hicks and their wives/sisters" hahaha...very nice ;)

The people who matter (employers and grad schools) know how good cornell is. Random people on the street may not, but i actually prefer it that way.

i hate it when people are like...i hope you don't commit suicide, cuz i heard they just make you jump off the gorges. or they're like why do you want to be in ithaca?? or what are you gonna learn when you get there? how to say housekeeping? and the other day i heard someone rippin off cornell about how it's not an ivy league b/c there's so many people and some of the schools partner with the state therefore it's not considered private.

When I told my guidance counseler I was applying to Cornell she was like "I heard they have a high suicide rate, it gets really dreary up there." lol wth

sillyrabbit and steve22, i KNOWWW...WHAT IS THAT...these people obviously have no idea about anything...

Nobody around here knows enough about Cornell to have heard about that.

umm.. assuming you're going to Cornell Engineering, maybe she just thought highly enough of you that she thought you should be going to a better engineering school, that's all. they do exist, you know. it could be a compliment, not an insult. (Cornell fanbois, lol.) then again, she did quote USNews right off the bat, so she could be a moron. haha.

well, among us really poor folks (and I graduated from a New York High School, keep in mind) who didn't have the money to research schools as thoroughly, I didn't know Cornell existed until someone at my school got in ED. I applied on a whim and got in. They gave me the most money so I went. okay, so I'm probably an abnormality considering when I applied, I thought engineering was a school to learn about trains. but really, compared to many other schools in the US who are well-known because of sports, Cornell isn't that accomplished in that arena unless you are a college hockey fan. no offense, but more people know about LSU, UF, etc than Cornell. That is what I meant.

To the OP

Regardless of where her kid went, you should have asked her where she received her education, if she did at all. Of course, be sure to know in advance that she didn't go to Princeton or something. :D

But I think it would have been funny if you'd been totally cool but a smartass about it (like I am about most things) and said:

"Yeah, I think it'll be great. I can only hope it'll be as amazing as your school was. Where was it that you went again?"

And then wait for that long pause...lol

PS: And I highly doubt she did end up going to a school any better (or nearly as good as) Cornell, as I'm pretty sure most students that get into these schools are intelligent and sincere enough to not rub it in a kid's face when they are an adult.

Who cares what she thinks...you're going to CORNELL and your employers are gonna know what a Cornell engineering degree means

The notion that anyone needs to defend Cornell University on intellectual grounds (much less any grounds) is laughable.

i just got poked fun of for the high ED acceptance rate ....:'(

this is such a joke... i hate some people...

Just think what the Harvard accepts have to go through....... I pity those guys sometimes.
