RAs go out. A LOT.

I guess I was a little taken aback. I'm not a crazy party beast, but I would go out a few times a month my first two years in college. Now that I am a first-year RA in my junior year, I figured partying was a no-no. I was a little taken aback to see that RAs at my school party as much as, if not more, than the regular students. They're just much, much better at not getting caught. This isn't to say we don't take our jobs seriously; everyone on my staff is a real help to the students and gets the work done. They're very smart about partying, but they do it nevertheless.

I wonder if this is the experience at other schools.

Just as long as you guys are doing your jobs (i.e. being in your dorm when on duty; not making loud noises when coming in at 2 in the morning), it shouldn’t be a problem.

My RA from sophomore year, I suspect he went out because several times I couldn’t get a hold of him after 10pm. But he was a terrible RA anyway, not because he did/did not party but because he just didn’t know anything when you asked him for help. He was lame and too “soft” =</p>

There was an RA in my building who got fired after the second week because she came back extremely drunk and screaming loud.

That is not my experience.

At my school I never even lay eyes on my RAs. I have no idea what they are for, besides supposedly doing rounds at night-- on three or four separate occasions last year I spent a couple hours futilely trying to get in touch with the RA on duty.

At my cousin’s school they have curfews and most of the time aren’t even allowed to go out. I never see her anymore because she can never leave in the evenings. It’s crazy.

Emaheevul07-that’s horrible. You should be able to get in touch with the RAs if you need to. Talk to the people in Residential Life about that asap.

It’s pretty much the opposite at my school; the RAs almost never go out and party because if our bosses find out (and they always manage to find out one way or another) we will not only lose our jobs, but our housing. It’s just not really worth it to most of us. However, there’s always at least one RA who gets asked to leave and/or resigns because they got caught either drinking with residents or came back to campus drunk.

Some RAs are over 21, and they can drink if they like, they just can’t confront any situation while they’re drunk so they obviously can’t drink if they’re on call.

This is the official situation at my school as well. The position is highly prestigious and very carefully monitored. The RAs are really great guys. If they catch us partying, we will lose our jobs and housing. Still, most RAs do, and that’s what took me aback a little. I think the real difference is how smart they are about it - both the drinking and the not getting caught.

Same here, you can never find an ra when you need one.

It gets really fun once the RA’s start bangin’ their residents

my RA goes out a decent amount, but hes not a crazy partier. its prob cuz hes in a fraternity. ive heard of RAs at my school buying alcohol for people on their floor last year

bahahah. My freshman year RA was a nazi about drinking. Sophomore year, the girl RA would give my friends shots of grey goose, she was sweet! The guy RA on my floor would wander into his residents rooms drunk all the time Thursday through Saturday and talk to us all the time (he was 21). Too funny

Oh and freshman year one of my friends slept with the RA on her floor. Awkward!!! haha

This year though, as a member of the ResLife staff (not a mentor though) I’ve noticed that the RAs aren’t too crazy partiers, although they do go to the bars sometimes. However, last week on Tuesday my (21 year old) RA was having a party in her room with glasses clanking and her friends shouting about booze. Kinda random.

It’s definitely about how smart they are - RAs will lose their job if they get caught drinking under-age. Even though they may party a lot generally they are pretty smart about it.
